TLDR

Yann LeCun recalls attending his first US conference in June 1986, visiting MIT and meeting Marvin Minsky. Minsky was surprised, LeCun says, that he had trained a neural net to multiply two binary numbers. Quoting LeCun, another commentator likened the Connection Machine to a huge GPU with one-bit processors running something like shaders, while acknowledging the analogy's limits.

Mikhail Parakhin@MParakhinThe Connection Machine was so ahead of its time - it was really like one huge GPU with 1-bit “processors” running something we would later call a Shader. Yes, yes, I know all the ways it is the wrong analogy, I’m still right :-)1h
Shital Shah@sytelusFun fact: Feynman was part of original Thinking Machine and they had a t-shirt which depicted their neural network on what may the first accelerator. I wore this t-shirt at various conferences and nerdy places hoping someone would recognize it. No one ever did.1h
