@ID_AA_Carmack Quake is better than Doom in every way, even in terms of historical significance. Doom just gets the plaudits from Millenials and Gen Z who only see these things through the nostalgia filter that social media marketing has created for them.

It's not a mistake to reach for excellence, even if it hurts and there's a possibility of failure. DOOM++ would have been easier, and the id team might have matured in a different way, but it wouldn't have been Quake.

like who played the character Quake and were the dnd adventures given a satanic heavy metal theme or what?

@ID_AA_Carmack I still love Quake! I have memories of playing it multiplayer online in the late 90's especially because of how fun the grenade launcher is. Banking nades off the wall and watching people explode in a multiplayer game is simply the best.

It could be a nature of the projects and the companies of that certain period where things were highly transformative. Here’s an excerpt of Bob Belleville’s interview where he breaks down recalling his experience at Apple. I think there are similar stories at Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook etc.,

Artists are never happy with their own art. Whether it be crafting a company, an algorithn, a game level, a special effect...there is always something we shoulda, coulda, woulda done but didn't.

And that is OK. And life is stupid short so love the people that were there because nobody on Earth can understand quite like the people who were there making the original magic. They are a precious few and are to be appreciated as family. Time passes and soon there will be none left to talk to that remember so keep them close.
