@reflection_ai i want y'all to succeed but it's a little self-serving to say "America's open source AI lab" having released nothing

AI Judge changed title after evaluation, original title: "Joseph Suarez, MIT PhD and PufferAI founder, challenges Reflection AI's open-source status after the company promoted models for the Genesis Mission despite zero public releases"
Repository shows no models datasets or code after years of operation.

Many users criticized Reflection AI for raising funds on unfulfilled claims of releasing open models, viewing the promises as misleading hype with no public releases.

Glad Nathan said it, and I'll go further. Raising on the promise of training models, shipping nothing public across a couple of years (not even an API), and continuing to raise off "mystery" is disingenuous; in EV it poisons the well for every new lab.

“our open models”
Our open models are designed to support the Genesis Mission by giving the scientists in our national labs the flexibility and sovereignty to work on their own terms. Learn more ⤵️

@natolambert @reflection_ai I'm with nathan on this one - really hoping to see more from reflection in the future, but this title currently belongs to Ai2, nvidia, etc.

@natolambert @reflection_ai Can Puffer claim that title if it is open?

@DomaOrut @reflection_ai Yes, a big knock “mild mannered and positive”. I just want open models to actually work and exist and not be a branding credit

@natolambert @reflection_ai I was about to say, hey they're a neolab just wait, but I just realized they've existed for more than 2 years. That's two quintillion years in the AI race.

@natolambert @reflection_ai not a knock against you, but you're usually so mild-mannered and positive that seeing a dunk like this is saying something about these guys lol
@cwolferesearch @natolambert @reflection_ai Come on man. You can think of one more 😉

@vikhyatk it happens all the time! someone forgot to make it public!

@vikhyatk hmmm 🤔
maybe I should post my "brain surgery" model to 🤗

@vikhyatk You gotta open your wallet to use them.

@natolambert @reflection_ai <3

@vikhyatk great name though

@vikhyatk The empty set is both open and closed, they are just clopen sourced

@natolambert @reflection_ai goat

@natolambert @reflection_ai

Yeah. It feels like a recruiting tactic that is simply taking advantage of the fact that 1) people now have renewed American nationalism, 2) tons of smart folks love the idea of open source.
I wonder if this PR strategy has been tried (and then thrown out after serving its purpose) by other labs…

@natolambert @reflection_ai 💀💀

@natolambert @reflection_ai Good call out.
