New WM-Basin test targets LLMs distilled from watermarked outputs
Hongyan Chang and colleagues report higher detection than a token-level baseline in mathematical-reasoning tests using API access alone.
TLDR
In an Oct. 27 paper, Hongyan Chang and colleagues introduce WM-Basin, a test that queries a model through its API for signs of training on watermarked outputs. In mathematical-reasoning experiments, they report 79% detection at n-gram=1 versus 29% for a token-level baseline, at a 0.1% false-positive rate. Those results concern the models in their experiments, not identified outside copies.
