It's disappointing to see common wisdom developing that AI consciousness debates are all about companies hyping up their models. Plenty of people have been thinking about this for decades and a lot of the people arguing about it now were saying the same thing years before LLMs

They're working from pretty mainstream ideas in secular philosophy of mind. If you object to the whole project of philosophy of mind on religious grounds, or you have strong reasons to believe specific things about philosophy of mind, it's fine to dismiss the debate on those grounds, but not on the grounds that this is all inherently ridiculous. Enough smart philosophers disagree that it needs to be treated as an acceptable debate.
