Google DeepMind Opens SynthID Detector to the Public

Google expanded its SynthID Detector tool, previously limited to journalists and researchers, making it freely available worldwide. The tool detects invisible watermarks in images, videos, and audio indicating AI generation or editing from Google models and partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA, Kakao, and Apple.

    TLDR

In an era of easy deepfakes and AI-generated content, SynthID provides a practical, industry-backed verification layer for transparency and trust. It addresses disinformation concerns and aligns with growing regulatory and public scrutiny of AI media, though it relies on watermarks that can sometimes be circumvented or absent.

A screenshot of the SynthID Detector landing page, titled "SynthID Detector: Identify AI generated media." In the center is a file upload box with a "Select file" button and drag-and-drop support. Below it, partner company logos are displayed under "DETECTS MEDIA GENERATED BY:" — NVIDIA, OpenAI, Google, and kakao. Three information cards at the bottom explain how SynthID digital watermarking works and outline its detection capabilities.

Pushmeet Kohli@pushmeetI’m pleased to announce SynthID Detector is now available as a universal verification platform. It’s an important step forward in helping people easily identify AI-generated content across the internet. Starting today, anyone can check whether images, audio, or video were created using models from @Google or our partners across the industry, including @OpenAI, @Nvidia, and @Kakao. Ever since our research teams at @GoogleDeepMind developed our first models, we understood that tracing the origin of digital content would become a central pillar of trust in the AI era. Today’s announcement combines the scientific achievements of SynthID with a shared commitment to making verification work seamlessly across platforms. I’m proud of our teams and partners for working together to make this possible. NewsTongue@NewsTongueX🔴 Google launches public SynthID detector supporting OpenAI, Nvidia, Apple watermarks Google rolled out http://SynthID.com, a free website to detect AI-generated content from multiple providers. The detector now identifies watermarks from OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao, and (soon) Apple, ending the previous limitation that only flagged Google's own SynthID markers. Gemini has embedded SynthID watermarks in over 180 billion images and videos plus 240,000 years of audio. Previously, checking for invisible watermarks required access to individual company tools or asking Gemini directly.6m
Dhaval@SiftByteSo finally Google is coming into this Watermark race, but in a different way! Google will help detect media that was made using AI. The better part is that NVIDIA and OpenAI are partner in this, so basically OpenAI is asking Google to decipher their watermark using a website. The best part is, this is open for everyone who wants to check, and it does it the Google way! Google is following the way don't become evil.6m
