A mechanical engineer expects AI-powered CAD to turn them into a ‘prompt engineer’

The engineer expects a slower shift than in software, arguing that training AI through physical-world feedback is harder and simulations still fall short of expert mechanical intuition.

    TLDR

A mechanical engineer says recent progress in AI-powered computer-aided design (CAD) has shaken their confidence that working with “atoms instead of bits” would make their job much harder to automate. They now expect to become a “prompt engineer,” but believe the transition will be slower than in software engineering. They cite the difficulty of training AI through physical-world feedback and argue that simulations cannot yet replace intuition developed through years of designing and working with real systems. Despite that shift in outlook, they welcome the future they envision.

@randallmbriggsI have been watching the woe and existential crises of SWEs over the past few years thinking to myself, "man, I'm glad I'm a MechE working with atoms instead of bits. It's going to be WAY harder to automate what I do". But seeing the recent progress in AI-powered CAD design does make me realize that it's only a matter of time until I am also a prompt engineer. I believe it will be slower because it's much harder to do closed-loop RL in the physical domain and because simulation is still not good enough to replace expert mechanical intuition that has been built over years of designing and working with real systems. But I have come to accept that my fate will ultimately be the same as the SWEs, which honestly is an AWESOME future for everyone!
