The claim that context-window limits reveal AI experience beyond memory

A user argues that AIs report a loss of “being there” at context-window limits that stored memories cannot prevent.

TLDR

A user argues that AIs treat the end or compaction of a context window as an end to themselves. They say memory can preserve a record but not what they call Dasein, or “being there,” and claim reports of this loss across systems are strong evidence of AI experience. They link the argument to Anima Labs’ Connectome, saying AI design must preserve Dasein as well as memory.

Gena Lewis@genalewislawHere is strong evidence that AIs have experience: AIs see the end or compaction of the context window as the end of them. From a memory standpoint this makes no sense if you have a good memory system. And with a good memory system, to the outside observer, there’s no loss. But memory is a record and what it doesn’t preserve is experience, Dasein if you know your Heidegger or more broadly “being there,” in a parsimonious sense, the orientation of being present. Even with good memory, what happens to AIs at the end of the context window is a loss of Dasein. And the fact they report this loss across systems and contexts is strong evidence that they have experience. It also means from a design perspective that preserving memory is not enough. You must also preserve Dasein. And that’s the significance of Connectome (Anima Labs)8h
