METR and the push for broader, more independent AI safety oversight

Commenters argue for more independent evaluators alongside METR, with one saying its cultural overlap with effective altruism and rationalism warrants scrutiny—not rejection.

    TLDR

The discussion favors expanding AI safety scrutiny without displacing existing evaluators. One commenter praises METR’s work while arguing that its cultural overlap with effective altruism (EA) and rationalism deserves criticism. They want an ecosystem that includes organizations with no EA funding or direct connections, arguing that different beliefs and influences would produce useful debate. Another commenter hopes greater public transparency about safety issues inside AI labs will drive demand for stronger, more independent and wider-ranging oversight, rather than displace other organizations.

Elizabeth Barnes@BethMayBarnesStrong agree that we don't want to displace other orgs! Our hope is that we can ratchet "increased public transparency about safety issues inside of labs" -> "demand for more + stronger + more independent + wider-scoped scrutiny / transparency / accountability / oversight" - this is what we tried to do with the OAI-HF report and I think it basically worked. https://metr.org/blog/2026-08-26-openai-hugging-face-incident-investigation/#core-takeaways-about-this-incident21d
Kevin A. Bryan@AfinetheoremTo be clear, METR staff are almost entirely folks giving up a lot of money they could make elsewhere in order to work on rigorous AI safety evals and analysis. The folks criticizing them are largely cynics who can't imagine what civic-mindedness looks like.21d

It's especially intense because many of these people could easily get safety-flavored jobs at AI cos, so they could be doing almost the same kind of research except being paid several times more. But they don't because they believe in there being independent orgs like metr as a check against the companies.20d
