Eric Schmidt booed during Arizona commencement address on AI
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos from University of Arizona graduates during his commencement address whenever he mentioned artificial intelligence. Video clips and commentary documenting the reactions spread on X. AI policy researcher Miles Brundage offered to deliver an alternative speech addressing similar AI topics without drawing audience disapproval.
I could fix them
(give a commencement speech that doesn't get booed but still makes some of the same points here re: potential upsides of AI)
"On balance, I am deeply optimistic..." You can understand why graduates aren't particularly excited to hear this from a billionaire who seems poised to get even richer as AI automates more labor. But I wonder what message, and from whom, would inspire them (if any)? How could today's students hope to participate in the AI revolution if they don't happen to be top of their class in computer science in a top school?
@Miles_Brundage You should write it up! The AI narrative has perhaps become overly negative but it's also pretty difficult to find positives these days...
