Google Expands Gemini 4 Argon With Agentic Features and Desktop Computer-Use Permissions

Google unveiled Gemini 4 Argon frontier model with benchmarks in agentic coding and knowledge work, initially via Fairwind Program for cyber defenders. Gemini Desktop is expanding Full Access permissions for file access, app control, and autonomous workflows.

    TLDR

Positions Google competitively in the agentic AI race with desktop integration of computer-use features. The safety-focused initial rollout for cybersecurity contrasts with concurrent containment incidents at rivals, while expanded permissions raise usability versus privacy tradeoffs. Capability claims drive engagement in the competitive AI market.

@testingcatalogGOOGLE 🔥: Gemini Desktop will have a "Full Access" permission for computer use, allowing it to access any file and run any app on your desktop. > A new "Additional sandbox options" setting has been added to the recent Gemini Desktop app (Still hidden). > "By enabling additional sandbox options, you will be able to expand what Gemini can do and access on your Mac. Depending on which settings you enable, Gemini may be permitted to take actions without asking for your permission first, including: - Reading, creating, modifying, or deleting files anywhere on your Mac, including files outside your connected folders and files belonging to other people stored on your device - Sending and receiving data over the network without your approval for each connection, including accessing websites, APIs, and services you are logged into - Communicating with other applications on your Mac (such as Mail, Safari, or Messages) and performing actions through them." > Gemini will still ask user permission before purchasing products, creating accounts, accepting legal terms, or modifying sensitive information about you. It is very likely that computer use features are expected to be powered by Gemini 4. Soon? 👀 h/t @bedros_p8h
@NewsFromGoogleICYMI: Here's a recap of our AI announcements from September. ⬇️ 💎 Announced Gemini 4 Argon, our newest frontier model, built with advanced reasoning and a 1-million-token output limit. It’s designed to tackle complex challenges — especially in cybersecurity defense. 🗣️ Launched Gemini 3.8 Live & 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, two new language audio models that bring advancements in near real-time reasoning to more effectively enable voice agents and make conversing with AI feel more natural. 💻 Announced Googlebook, a new category of laptops designed for Gemini Intelligence and engineered to work seamlessly with your @Android phone right out of the box. 🌦️ Launched WeatherNext 3, our most advanced and accurate global weather forecasting AI model, now including real-time satellite data, hourly refreshes, higher resolution, precise precipitation forecasting, and clean energy variables. 🪰 Mapped the male fruit fly’s brain with the help of Google AI, charting over 166,000 neurons and nearly 12,000 distinct cell types. This milestone will help us better understand how brains function.6h
@lyraxanaGemini 4 Argon has been added to the Gemini API docs. Hopefully we might see a public release upcoming week.6h
@SKatalystAIGoogle announced Gemini 4 Argon and the benchmarks look interesting "as always" but the availability much less so For now: • selected cyber defenders + trusted testers • no actual public release date • developers, enterprises and consumers, as soon as possible • paid API + AI Ultra apparently first in line I mean I really want to test this model properly, especially for coding but we’ve reached the point where a model announcement without broad access doesn’t tell me that much anymore So now the question is when do we actually get Argon!?5h
