@rohanpaul_aiStripe has reportedly agreed to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7B . This price is at least 5.4x OpenRouter's $1.3B May valuation. That premium is most probably justified by OpenRouter's distribution, routing volume, and model-demand data alongside the API itself. OpenRouter’s traffic metadata may be harder to copy than its API surface. It gives a buyer a live view of which models win workloads, where demand moves, and how users react to price. Such evidence can inform pricing and product decisions more directly than a leaderboard. Stripe already powers OpenRouter's billing, tracking usage, applying pricing, and handling payments. If the reported acquisition closes, Stripe would own both the metering and routing layers for AI spending. A Stripe-owned OpenRouter could weaken model vendors’ pricing power more than another cheap model would. OpenRouter’s default routing favors healthy, lower-cost providers, while developers can switch models or providers without rebuilding each integration. Once that switching sits behind 1 API, a small change in price or reliability can redirect traffic much faster. OpenRouter has 10M+ global users, 500+ models behind its API, and 200T+ monthly tokens. Buying OpenRouter also puts Stripe in charge of a business whose usefulness depends on neutrality. Developers can control provider order, exclusions, price ceilings, and data-retention rules, so users can constrain how requests move. If ownership ever made routing look commercially biased, model suppliers or larger customers could bypass it through direct integrations or other gateways. Stripe therefore has to preserve user-controlled routing even if tighter integration would increase revenue elsewhere.

@andrew_n_carrI know this may seem surprising, but it's the next logical choice. I think a lot of the " previous generation" of large startups are making their way into infrastructure layer for AI. Aesthetically this makes a lot of sense for stripe to do as a routing and platform layer. I don't have any strong opinions on the price, but I think it is likely a significant enough premium to be attracted for the open router people

@uninsightfulAlex Atallah has to be one of the most impressive founders of the last 10 years fully called his shot twice built Opensea in complete obscurity for 3 years until the market came to him. not an enduring business but $1b monthly revenue at peak is no joke! then @alexatallah started Openrouter well before it was obvious 1) that a multi-model world would rapidly unfold and 2) that value could be captured at this layer. again the market came to him fantastic acquisition by Stripe who wants to be in the flow of all internet commerce, which increasingly means being in the flow of tokens. win-win for all
