A call to allow AI pre-training on UK soil

A commenter argues UK laws should change to enable domestic AI pre-training, rather than restricting local expertise to testing.

    TLDR

A commenter argues that the UK should change its laws to permit domestic AI pre-training instead of limiting local expertise to testing. They warn that reliance on American models could severely damage the UK economy and public services, and urge the government to let UK talent compete with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Ross Taylor@rosstaylor90This is a very passive position and I hope laws can be changed to make pre-training possible on UK soil; otherwise we are doomed to be a US vassal state. I live in Canary Wharf and I look around and “see dead people” about to be completely automated by American models. If you think 2008 was a permanent shock to the UK tax base - that led to two decades of sustained austerity - then you haven’t seen anything yet. A Doggerland scale tsunami is headed for the UK economy and public services. We must be mad as a country to allow this to happen. It is not good enough to restrict our expertise to testing. We must be able to pre-train on UK soil. (I really respect the work that @KanishkaNarayan and many others in Government are doing to advance the argument: but please release the shackles on domestic talent and allow us to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic!)2h
