    Humanoid progress beyond movement

A post credits the DARPA Robotics Challenge with enabling progress and floats another contest, arguing that handling objects remains hard and specialized setups often win.

    TLDR

One post argues that comparisons of humanoid robot progress should account for how robots handle and interact with objects. The author praises recent advances, particularly in movement, but says manipulation remains extremely difficult and specialized setups often win. Crediting the DARPA Robotics Challenge as a major enabler, they suggest another challenge to gauge progress—perhaps excluding driving and other tasks they expect specialized hardware to handle.

@m_wulfmeierNot completely fair to compare humanoid robot progress without manipulation and object interaction in general. The DARPA Robotics challenge has been an immense enabler and should be credited as such. I remember the awe and fascination watching it back then. Recent advances in humanoids are incredible - particular dynamics. I would love to restart our previous soccer project @GoogleDeepMind and see how far we get. But good manipulation is still incredible hard and often the specialized setup wins. Maybe it's time for another DARPA challenge to really check for far we got! Though maybe this time without driving a car or other tasks that will clearly built on specialized hardware in the future.
