    TLDR

In a reply to @altryne, OpenAI Research Engineer Ted Sanders recalled a remark from Dario in 2017 or 2018. Sanders called the quotation hilarious and summarized it as Dario saying superintelligence is a nebulous term so he prefers to talk about AGI instead. The post identifies Sanders as focused on LLMs, prompting, and model improvements. No original source or further context for the remark appears in the visible reply.

@sandersted@altryne there’s a hilarious quotation from Dario in like 2017 or 2018 where he’s like superintelligence is such a nebulous term so I prefer to talk about AGI instead
@maxhodak_the debate over definitions is super tiring... these models are clearly "general" intelligences; the span of things they can engage in at a high level is very obviously much wider than 95%+ of humans "AGI" is not some magic destination, it is just a description of these systems
@HeinrichKuttler@pfau @LinkofSunshine correct. the 2016 definition of "AGI" at DeepMind was much more like the second coming of Jesus. Recursive self improvement, singularity, no way to predict the future past that point, zero marginal product for close to all human work.
@pfau@HeinrichKuttler @LinkofSunshine We should probably just set up bots to tag team these responses every time a new model release happens.
@GaryMarcusExcellent analysis, and yes this happens every single time. (Tyler Cowen said o3 was AGI!)
