François Chollet Calls for Collective AI Choices

The AI researcher states that progress requires deliberate decisions on desired world outcomes.

    TLDR

François Chollet posted on X that for a long time the limits of AI deployment were only defined by technical capabilities. As AI advances rapidly, he argues deployment must become a deliberate collective choice about the kind of world societies want to shape. In a linked earlier post, Chollet urges keeping humans in the loop on all critical processes to maintain control and visibility even if full autonomy becomes technically possible. Christian Catalini replied that human preferences require staying in the loop through augmentation or better tooling.

@fcholletI believe we need to make a deliberate effort to keep humans in the loop in all critical processes across our economy and society, regardless of whether it is technically necessary. Even if AI develops the *capability* for advanced autonomy, we should not make it highly autonomous. We have to maintain control and keep visibility and understanding of all critical processes, we should not blindly hand over everything to AI agents just because we can. AI as a tool in the human hand is the only form of AI that is worth pursuing.
@ccataliniWhether through human augmentation or better tooling, if we want human preferences correctly represented, we need to stay in the loop.
