    TLDR

Google DeepMind and Google Research announced WeatherNext 3, their most advanced global weather AI model. It trains directly on raw weather station observations and real-time satellite data to deliver hourly high-resolution forecasts, precise precipitation predictions, and clean energy variables. The system provides a five times resolution boost in temperature forecasts and captures localized microclimates. WeatherNext 3 now powers forecasts in Google Search, Gemini, Maps, and Google Maps Platform. Developers and researchers can access the data via BigQuery, Earth Engine, and GCS. Independent live evaluations from Brightband rate the predictions state-of-the-art.

@PeterWBattagliaI’m excited to share WeatherNext 3, our most powerful AI forecasting model yet. WeatherNext 3 generates forecasts each hour and at high-resolution, giving timely and more localized predictions. It’s trained on new data sources, like live satellites, and achieves state-of-the-art skill, according to independent evaluations by Brightband. Importantly, it will also be accessible to billions of people across Google products worldwide. One of the features I’m most excited about is its ability to forecast precipitation, which was a longstanding challenge for global weather forecasting models. Precipitation forecasts can be up to 50% more accurate, with the greatest precipitation forecasting improvements in regions where forecasts have traditionally been less reliable. There are also new variables that are particularly relevant for renewable energy forecasting, like turbine-height wind speed and high resolution cloud cover. There are many other improvements across the board, and together this was the result of fantastic work by our teams at @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch . @GoogleDeepMindWeatherNext 3 is a major breakthrough in how we forecast global weather. ⛅ Developed with @GoogleResearch, the model learns directly from real-world, real-time observations to give more localized highly accurate predictions faster. 🧵
@ZoubinGhahrama1Our latest and most advanced weather forecasting AI, WeatherNext 3, is out! It uses real-time satellite data to produce brand new forecasts each hour at high resolutions. Its predictions are state-of-the-art according to live evaluations from Brightband, and will help everyone from those checking whether it’s going to rain to renewable energy businesses. It’s a brilliant team effort from my colleagues at @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch, and you can read more here https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/google-deepmind/introducing-weathernext-3/
@GoogleToday, @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch are introducing WeatherNext 3, our most advanced and accurate global weather AI model to date. It uses real-time satellite data to generate hourly high-resolution forecasts, precise precipitation forecasting, and clean energy variables. Most AI weather models are trained on data from numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, which come with a six-hour data lag. But by training on real-world observations, WeatherNext 3 is able to bypass these traditional constraints — meaning more people can get more accurate predictions to help them plan ahead. Starting today, WeatherNext 3 will power forecasts within Search, @GeminiApp, @GoogleMaps, Google Maps Platform Weather API and Google Earth Engine.
@NewsFromGoogleIntroducing WeatherNext 3, our most advanced and accurate global weather AI model to date, from @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch. This new forecasting model learns directly from real-time observations, and uses raw satellite data to produce a forecast every hour in high resolution. These breakthroughs mean it can provide timely and more localized predictions, bringing even more reliable forecasts across Google products worldwide, including Search, Gemini and Maps.
@FerranAletExcited to share WeatherNext 3 from @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch! High-res temperature and precipitation forecasting using the latest satellite observations 🛰️ It's also the best global weather model according to Brightband's live leaderboard! https://owb.brightband.com/
@tom_r_anderssonOur team just released WeatherNext 3, the best global weather model currently available (benchmark: https://owb.brightband.com). WN3's high resolution, hourly forecasts are more useful than ever. You can access them anywhere on Earth via Weather Lab: https://deepmind.google.com/science/weatherlab

@GoogleAIIntroducing WeatherNext 3️⃣— our most advanced global weather AI model yet from @GoogleDeepmind and @GoogleResearch With prediction capabilities that are up to 5x sharper than WeatherNext 2, the model generates a forecast with high spatial resolution in order to catch fast-evolving rainstorms, map local temperature shifts, and even help wind farms predict their power output. So, how does it do that? While traditional weather models rely on massive, physics-based supercomputer simulations that can carry a 6-hour forecast lag, WeatherNext 3 leverages live geostationary satellite observations as inputs and trains directly on real-world surface and atmospheric observations. By pulling this raw satellite data, it’s able to update the global forecast every single hour. And because weather develops at lightning speed, these quick, detailed insights can help bring more localized forecasting to billions of people and local businesses, especially in regions that are historically underserved due to the high costs of traditional weather forecasting models.
@pushmeetReally proud of the relentless progress our weather prediction team is making. WeatherNext 3 sets a new standard for prediction fidelity, accuracy and coverage. Great example of how AI can help all of us plan better for the future! https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/google-deepmind/introducing-weathernext-3/
