In an essay posted on X, Demis Hassabis argued that artificial general intelligence is probably "only a few short years away" and compared its potential impact to fire or electricity. He said AGI could speed drug discovery, clean energy and materials research, while also raising cybersecurity, biosecurity and nuclear risks. Hassabis called for stronger safeguards and proposed what he described as a U.S.-led standards body to test frontier models before release.
