Hugging Face Bio built Carbon-X from Qwen3-14B, mid-training it on 302 billion tokens of DNA, biology text, English and instruction data. The team says the model can predict mutation effects and generate DNA. It estimates Carbon-X's inference cost per problem at about 1/1,800 of GPT-6.1 Sol's, using standard API pricing for comparison models and an H200 GPU priced at $5 an hour for Carbon-X.
