The challenge of keeping humans in the loop with AI agents

A position paper by Margaret Mitchell, Avijit Ghosh and Samir Passi argues that keeping humans in the loop is not enough to ensure effective oversight of AI agents. The authors say prolonged AI use can degrade the skills oversight requires. They propose design features and organizational protocols to help people exercise critical judgment and counter skill atrophy.
