    TLDR

WIRED reports that Timnit Gebru argues AI companies use fears of extinction to divert attention from actual harms, including autonomous weapons. A user sharing the report echoes that criticism, describing “Singularity” claims as advertising for a level of artificial general intelligence they say there is no evidence anyone will reach soon.

@TrackBigTech👀 Yes. And AI data centers that are poisoning our children and communities.💢

@Turn_TroutFalse 1. I literally quit my Google DeepMind job & lost >>$300k to call out harms regarding autonomous weapons... and extinction risk is still more important, which is why I'm speaking out + working to solve it 2. GDM does NOT want to stoke fears about extinction risks lol
@KelseyTuocWe've gone from "fears of extinction from RSI distract us from real problems like algorithmic bias" to "fears of extinction from RSI distract us from real problems like agent swarms and autonomous killer robots". But actually, RSI will make those problems into bigger problems.

@timrudnerThis seems like an odd straw man. I think there's more that unites us than divides us when it comes to making sure AI benefits humanity. For example, most of the people I know who are concerned about superintelligent AI are also very worried about AI-powered autonomous weapons.
@nitashatiku@Turn_Trout how does your (v laudable & costly!) personal decision to leave GDM over autonomous weapons explain how the company feels about employees using a popular term like "extinction risk"? Demis is the 3rd signatory here https://safe.ai/work/statement-on-ai-extinction-risk
