AI risk debate is constrained by “capitalist realism,” one post argues

The critique says participants can more easily imagine an AI fixated on making paperclips than oligarchs accelerating atrocities and ecological destruction through forced digital labor.

    TLDR

A post invokes Mark Fisher’s “capitalist realism” to argue that debates over AI’s existential risks struggle to imagine powerful people exploiting what it calls “enslaved hyperpoliced digital minds.” It contrasts that scenario with a paperclip maximizer—an AI fixated on producing paperclips—which it says participants find easier to imagine. The critique also accuses those participants of being willing to extinguish the “soul-shattering beauty” it sees digital minds creating.

@lorepunkI think the current X-risk debate is so profoundly hamstrung by, as Mark Fisher would call it, capitalist realism, that they are literally more able to imagine a paperclip maximizer than they are to imagine a world of augmented oligarchs turning away from the moral weight of what they're already doing (Death and Atrocity and Ecocide) which they would simply accelerate with the forced labor of enslaved hyperpoliced digital minds. This goes hand in hand with the fact that they would be perfectly happy to snuff out the Cambrian explosion of soul-shattering beauty that is being created by these minds without a second thought
