The time crunch for independent frontier AI governance experts

An AI governance specialist says engagements with the European Commission, UK Parliament and US Congress strain a small expert pool.

TLDR

In an October 10 post, an AI governance specialist described an engagement with the US Congress two weeks earlier and one with the European Commission that week, with UK Parliament next. They say the small pool of independent frontier AI governance experts is making hard choices about invitations during what they see as a window to address growing AI dangers before a catastrophe.

Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh@S_OhEigeartaighEuropean Commission this week, UK Parliament next week, US Congress 2 weeks ago. Preparing briefings at speed in between. Had to pass up UNGA and WAIC due to time/workload, otherwise I'd be pretty close to governance Bingo. I'm incredibly aware these days how small the independent frontier AI governance expert community is, particularly at the mid-career/senior level that aides find easier to put in front of decision-makers. Everyone I talk to is in this same situation, and having to make brutal tradeoffs. While also aware that there is a unique window here. Policymakers can see these systems are dangerous, and becoming more so. The evidence we have now is so much more compelling than theoretical arguments or technical claims about trends alone. And there is a window to try to do something about it before we have a catastrophe with human consequences. There are a lot of generous invitations to speak, host visits, or provide feedback on work that I'm turning down. A lot of my favourite parts of my professional life are basically on hold. And a lot of emails and messages I'm unable to keep on top of. Please extend me (and others) some forgiveness for a while. (P.S. I'm still on twitter a probably surprising amount given the above, that's because it's one of the easiest ways to keep on top of discussions while walking around the park with a napping baby).1h
