Kimi reportedly wrote a compressor to test its own decompressor

With no zstd binary available to check its work, the model generated its own test files, according to a participant in Kimi's coding post-training run.

    TLDR

A participant in Kimi's coding post-training run says the model was tasked with writing a Zstandard decompressor but had no zstd binary available to check whether it worked. According to the account, it wrote a compressor first, generated valid test files and used those to test the decompressor.

@echenone of my favorite examples from our Kimi coding post-training run: it had to write a Zstandard decompressor, but there was no zstd binary available to check whether it worked. so the trained model wrote a compressor first, generated its own valid test files, and used those to test the decompressor. no ground truth existed, so it built one itself.
