OpenAI Confidentially Files IPO Paperwork As It Prepares For Public Listing

BREAKING: WSJ reports OpenAI just made its first formal move toward IPO.

it has confidentially filed draft paperwork for an IPO.

A confidential S-1 lets OpenAI start SEC review without immediately exposing revenue, losses, customer mix, compute costs, or executive pay, so the company can prepare for a listing while still keeping sensitive numbers private.

Last week Anthropic has already filed its own confidential IPO paperwork, so this is no longer only a model race, but a capital race between labs trying to finance the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Sam Altman's new blog about OpenAI's future path says by March-2028 a significant fraction of its own research will be done by AI.

The path has 3 goals mainly: build an automated AI researcher, use that to speed up science and productivity, then give every person a personal AGI that can help with work, learning, coding, business, health paperwork, and decisions.

Positive users are excited about OpenAI potentially ringing the bell at its IPO as a wild tech moment, while negative users see hypocrisy in its safety calls given compute constraints.

@rohanpaul_ai Looks like the 'model race' just became the 'who can raise more cash for GPUs' race.

OpenAI's latest official blog says the world may need a way to coordinate "slowing frontier development when needed."

@rohanpaul_ai Capital race to build more centralized infrastructure. Distributed compute is already running, no IPO required.

@rohanpaul_ai Weird, both of the compute-constrained companies, Anthropic and OpenAI are calling for a slow-down. Definitely nothing to do with compute. They're 100% concerned about AI safety.

@rohanpaul_ai The #AI race is now a capital race too. Frontier research needs serious compute, funding and governance to move at scale. #MachineLearning

@rohanpaul_ai Asking the whole field to slow down is easy to say and very hard to actually coordinate.
