Three meanings of “computer” in the brain-as-computer debate

A commenter says the brain is not a von Neumann machine, but whether broader computer models suffice remains an open question.

    TLDR

One commenter distinguishes an abstract machine that computes general recursive functions, a finite physical approximation of it and a von Neumann implementation of that physical machine. They argue the brain can be modeled as the first, is at least the second and is not the third. Whether the first two suffice as models of the brain, they say, remains an open question.

@getjonwithitThe brain can very clearly be modeled as (1). The brain is very clearly at least (2). The brain is very clearly not (3). Whether (1) and (2) *suffice* as models of the brain remains (for my money) an open question. Everything else here is just people being confused about words.2h
