Google DeepMind's Susan Zhang argues Anthropic is hyping a "capability slowdown" narrative to secure enterprise contracts ahead of a potential IPO

She argues AI labs are commercial businesses, not public services.

anthropic doesn't owe anyone "frontier capabilities".

none of the labs do.

they are all simply selling a product, or a story, that people pay for.

that aside, the more telling bit is how far anthropic is willing to go to secure a narrative around "capability slowdown", post a massive raise, before an ipo, and with enterprise contracts rising for those rich enough to pay to similarly keep up the image of "powered-by/secured-by agentic AI".

with the amount of capex spent so far, this was never meant to be some democratizing technology "for the people".

this is all simply just business.

Safetyism and Decel psyops are always instrumental and self-serving in the end.

@suchenzang the fact that it is a business is a feature, & not a bug.

that keeps incentive structures aligned at the most primitive market levels as opposed to fluff.

@suchenzang whose knowledge did they use to get frontier capabilities? They owe humanity the cure to diseases

I think they're a real shitty service provider, evidenced by how often their products go down and how they toggle usage limits without warning. But that's beside the point.

I hate the moral grand-standing they do, with Dario on helm, saying how they're the only ones who can be trusted with bringing about an aligned AGI.

@suchenzang The beauty of having quantum-ready doublethink: the "machine" that'll inadvertently destroy the world and must be suppressed* is the promethean flame that'll deliver us to the stars ... and both are true during the same news cycle ^^

@suchenzang This is why I never trust any company who claims to be "moral" or "beneficial" or "people-loving". The pure name of the company is a serious red-flag. "Safety washing" is a deep societal evil that must be quelled.

1000%. I think the issue (at least the one I take) is the disingenuous framing just say it’s a business decision personally I have no problem with that and it’s probably the right one for them to take but dont pretend its altruistic and for safety. It’s a business decision own it.

@suchenzang Anthropic will eventually be apart of the s&p500 and thus millions of working peoples 401ks and Iras. They ABSOLUTELY do owe people frontier capabilities, otherwise what is their value as a publicly traded company ? This is an industry funded by people’s retirement accounts

@suchenzang I am sorry but fable/mythos is a tier on its own no other model from other labs is close, I pay for 200$ sub in both anth and openai, I feel I get much more value from anth a this point, I am ready to pays 400$ sub for anth and close my sub of openai if it means to keep fable use

Im sorry but the data they used to get where they are, especially in the early innings, is very much owned to society. They are actively shutting the door behind them after walking a path thanks to all of us. It’s despicable and must be called out, but I can’t say in surprise by anything these guys do at this point, I saw through their shenanigans long ago

@suchenzang The problem is that much of their team and fans seem to believe a narrative that is not true

@suchenzang Exactly right. And I wouldn’t expect them to do otherwise. It is business time for every lab out there and has been since 2022. Mountains of money moving around…

@suchenzang It's crazy the enshittification is starting pre-IPO. I guess being a private company does not protect users from it. The really infuriating thing is trying to frame it as safety, when it's pure anticompetitive practices and marketing.

@suchenzang Except OpenAI does the opposite just fine, the flagging is disgusting. Like why have CVP if I won’t be able to use it for cybersecurity?
