@theshawwnThe original announcement link is a nice trip down memory lane. I remember how lame the idea of ChatGPT sounded. One thing that's hard to capture in text is "mindset at the time": history is often rewritten to make it seem winners are inevitable. But at the time, it wasn't obvious at all that this was anything but another tech demo. Nowadays of course it's embarrassing to admit that you didn't see it coming, but that turns out to be the usual case for technology. Very few people saw it coming, and when it did, it was easy to dismiss. I bet even Sam Altman himself was cautiously optimistic at announcement, but didn't realize he had found "it" -- the thing that would finally change day to day life. GPT was seen as little more than autocomplete. And getting it to give answers was nothing new. Back then you'd prompt it with "What do you think the answer of X is?" and it would autocomplete with an answer (usually a cute and impressive one, but only impressive in the way that a baby's first steps are). Ironically, I still don't think ChatGPT was "it". Chain of thought was. Getting GPT to plan out and give a comprehensive answer was the defining moment, when its capabilities really became obvious.@jxnlcohttps://chat.com@theshawwnThe original announcement link is a nice trip down memory lane.
