A September 12 post says Sam Altman told Fortune that OpenAI would not go public in 2026, citing AI safety concerns. One commenter calls that position “at least consistent and somewhat sensible” if pacing and safety are genuine priorities, while saying they are not personally worried about safety.

@ajsSam Altman told me yesterday there will be no IPO for OpenAI in 2026, that it would be “ill timed” given all they have to work on with alignment, control and safety https://fortune.com/2026/09/12/sam-altman-openai-ipo-delay-ill-advised-moment-safety-concerns/
@Yuchenj_UW@AndrewCurran_ Interesting, will Anthropic delay too? then it somewhat alleviates my 2nd concern here
@martin_casadoI mean, if we’re really serious about pacing. And actually worried about safety (I’m not). Then this is at least consistent and somewhat sensible.

@rohanpaul_aiBREAKING: Sam Altman just confirmed OpenAI is not going for IPO in 2026, in a Fortune Magazine interview. Sam Altman: “I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, this would be right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.” Fortune's Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell: “So it sounds like not 2026, 2027 potentially.” Sam Altman: “I would say not 2026.” ---- From "Fortune Magazine" YouTube channel, (full video link in comment)
@mattturckBreaking: VCs decide to pace their returns - it is just “not safe to get this close to the frontier (S&P 500)”
@beffjezosCapitalism is the ultimate alignment mechanism for orgs / companies. If they are not public, they are not incentivized to do what's best for the world / their customers. They rather obsess over creating a Singleton ASI that they control, one the market wouldn't necessarily want
