Perplexity announces fully local Computer tasks for its Mac app

On its product page, Perplexity distinguishes fully local tasks from Hybrid. Hybrid uses cloud models for research and reasoning while a model on the Mac works with private files. The company also puts a limit on “fully local”: It describes where the AI runs. Sending a message or meeting invitation still uses that app’s service. 9to5Mac’s Zac Hall reports that local tasks can run without an internet connection.

Perplexity says the option is available to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers on supported Apple silicon Macs, with 36 GB of unified memory recommended. Its follow-up post says local tasks use PPLX Pro and do not consume Computer credits. To get started, the company instructs users to install its Mac app and download a local model.
