The post argues that shared distrust of tech executives offers common ground, but factional loyalties are keeping many potential allies on the sidelines.

    TLDR

One post argues that watchdogs who have spent years challenging Big Tech could be strong allies for AI safety advocates: both distrust tech executives as stewards of the public’s interests. It says distaste for San Francisco effective altruists, alongside a preference for Washington civil-society circles, is leading many watchdogs to sideline themselves. The post also acknowledges and praises those who have not.

@NatPurserthis is a time where corporate power / anti-big tech watchdogs could be a strong ally to the ai safety world — they’ve spent years challenging the likes of Zuckerberg, we agree that tech execs aren’t the best stewards of our interests. but for factional reasons — we don’t like weirdo sf effective altruists, we like dc civil society or YLS types — many people in this space are sidelining themselves (and i know and respect the ones who aren’t). that’s a real shame.
