The case against joining an “inevitable” AI race

A critic of Anthropic argues that its leaders are too fearful of China and the U.S. government to believe negotiation is possible.

    TLDR

A critic argues that Anthropic’s leadership largely initiated the race to RSI because it believed that race was inevitable—and rejects contributing even if that belief is correct. A related comment stresses that builders can choose what to build, arguing that it probably should not be an “intelligence chain-reaction” like RSI.

@hilbertspaess0. The core disagreement was about the inevitability of a race 1. I think leadership is way too paranoid about China and the US government. They don’t believe it will be possible to negotiate. 2. They largely initiated the recent race to RSI, because of a belief in its inevitability. Note that OpenAI had to shed a bunch of dead weight like Sora because Anthropic was going for the jugular. 3. Even if they are **not** being pessimistic, I disagree with their consequentialist philosophy. If the race is inevitable you should not contribute.

@cjmaddisonIt's worth reflecting on 2. We can *choose* what we build, and it probably shouldn't be an intelligence chain-reaction like RSI.
@martin_casadoWell I gotta hand it to him. At least this is consistent with believing AI has a real chance of killing us all soon.
@_NathanCalvinOne of the most odd parts of the past week has been the extent to which Anthropic's perspective and Jacob's have been conflated. Jacob has very important disagreements with Anthropic! That's why he loudly and publicly quit!
