    TLDR

Joscha Bach posted a reply stating that the idea ethics emerges from summarizing the literature is nonsense. He defines ethics as the negotiation of conflicts of interest under conditions of shared purpose. Bach asserts that ethics can exist only when parties share purpose. Coordinating such purposes, he says, leads to the emergence of collectively constructed agents. The message is a direct response in an ongoing exchange on the platform and reflects his stated views on the topic as a cognitive scientist focused on AI and models of mind.

@PlinzThe idea that ethics emerges over summarizing the literature is nonsense. Ethics is the negotiation of conflicts of interest under conditions of shared purpose. You can only have ethics if you share purpose. Coordinating shared purposes leads to the emergence of collectively constructed agents. If you posit the existence of a global optimum of shared agency (= God), the question of ethics comes down to: what does God want me to do? For an agent that scales to encompass all others, it is the same question: what do I want to do, when I integrate the perspectives of all possible agents that are willing to serve the global optimum into a coherent perspective?
