ajinomoto, who you probably know mostly from seasonings, and maybe as the inventor of MSG, makes 20% of its profits (but only 5% of sales) from a semiconductor material necessary for high performance packaging.
They control 95% of the market and modern AI is basically impossible without it.
A fairly informative lesson in AI supply chain bottlenecks.
One thing I don’t understand is why Japanese businesses always have these weird profit centers that they keep hidden behind these insanely low margin businesses.

@StevenGlinert @Noahpinion Historically I think because they’re basically conglomerates with core expertise in eg chemicals or mechanical engineering that have many product lines
You could say similar things about Amazon…
