Trump administration reinstates policy requiring O-1 visa holders to leave the US when applying for green cards, affecting researchers at OpenAI

Up to half of OpenAI researchers on O-1 visas could be impacted.

Translation: if you’re a advanced researcher at OpenAI on the O1 visa (extraordinary ability) and you apply for a green card, they’ll make you go back abroad and wait years for an appointment. Of course, by then you probably no longer work at OpenAI.

The new White House policy requiring green card applicants to apply from outside the US is a capricious attack on legal immigration. It will hurt families, leave us with fewer doctors, teachers and scientists, and hurt American competitiveness in AI.

@Noahpinion Only in the US. It will accelerate the development of AI in the rest of the world.

Does this mean AI Researchers, employees, and students will now have to leave the country and wait through a backlog process to continue their work?

Harmful move for tech, business, and America broadly...

A lot of AI/tech execs have been vocal about the importance of competing with China recently.

Seeing who speaks out about this new green card policy will tell us a lot about who *actually* cares about US competitiveness, and who just uses China as a pretext to oppose regulation

Insane if true.

So 50% of OpenAI researchers have to leave the US and return to their home countries to apply for a green card?

Don’t drive talent away.

So basically all elite founders of multi-billion dollar companies contributing to AI and defense have to stop their work in order to convert to GC?

Make it make sense.

90% of attention was from immigrants in tech on a visa.

This single work produced tens of trillions in market value.

Stopping skilled immigration or making it ridiculously hard stops this miracle from happening again.

Death of the American Dream

Attention Is All You Need, one of the most important AI papers ever.... 7/8 authors were foreign nationals on work/student visas from India, UK, Canada, Ukraine. If we want USA dominance in AI (and tech broadly), we need to attract and retain global ultra-high-skilled talent.

Feeling robbed of my path to citizenship right now after grinding a PhD and contributing to foundational AI + computing technologies for the United States for the past ~ 10 years.

Feels like robbing top and technologists like me of the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

This sucks. America should welcome greatness. Builders, innovators, and creators should have a fast path to citizenship. I can’t fathom why we would make life harder for founders starting billion dollar companies that want to anchor themselves in the US.

Honestly pretty devastating.

Founders can't afford to leave the country while managing a billion dollar company.

This will also affect many employees who are some of the top scientists in the world in their specialty, working on mission critical tech for the US.

Sad day.

Every tech executive and startup accelerator manager with access to the President should call him to let him know this immigration policy change is a bad idea, and there needs to be a waiver for skilled AI / advanced tech employees

@beffjezos in my o1 application i did cite the 2025 biden announcement thingy abt ai researchers but it's like kinda weak and not rly enforced or anything

also, i had to get my openclaw to do deep research to find it lol

Beff (e/acc)Beff (e/acc)@beffjezos

This will set back US competitiveness massively unfortunately. They need a US national interest clause for researchers.

I'm so tired of incompetence being the governing principle even separate from the actual policies. It's as if knowledge of how to accomplish any actual policy objective is missing, and all we can do is swordfight over memes and white papers.

Whether it is ridiculous immigration policies that would immiserate the entire country or wealth taxes that would cause capital to flee, there is an absolute dearth of focus on actual efficacy.

People continue to have strong debates about the correct policies when almost any policy being discussed would be okay if it were implemented better. UBI would work, work reqs would work, hell wealth taxes could work, tight immigration could work, public healthcare could work, free schooling could work, markets for evthing could work ...

Just like there are hundreds of governance systems and thousands of companies each doing things their own way, competence and execution is the missing ingredient. Not the right magical policy.

This is bad for the US not just for those applying for a green card.

Many of the best researchers at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and other frontier labs are not U.S. citizens. They are in the U.S. on temporary visas while building the very systems Washington increasingly describes as critical to national security. Forcing them to leave the country to apply for a Green Card adds uncertainty, delays and risk to one of America’s biggest advantages: attracting the world’s best technical talent. I'm not American, so take this with a grain of salt. But from what I've researched, it makes many things significantly more complicated for OpenAI and Anthropic.

This administration entire policy is to torture hard working people who actually contribute to the nation. This will lead to faster decline & push even more skilled immigrants to other nations. A special congrats to tech/biotechMAGA.
