A challenge to a perceived US-centric history of 1980s neural networks

A user says they coded their first artificial neural network with backpropagation and a sigmoid function on a PC in 1985. They call an account of the field’s history a “US view,” say Hinton did not invent it, question LeCun’s role and say they mostly agree with a linked paper they describe as Schmidhuber’s.
