Amazon cut thousands of engineers in its record layoffs, despite saying it needs to innovate faster
Amazon's recent layoffs, the largest in its history, saw significant cuts in engineering roles, with nearly 40% of the 4,700 positions eliminated being engineering jobs. The layoffs, which affected various departments including cloud computing, devices, and advertising, were part of a broader effort to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the need for innovation and speed, with a focus on artificial intelligence, despite stating that AI was not the primary driver of the layoffs. The cuts also impacted product managers, program managers, and roles within Amazon's gaming division, visual search, and shopping teams, as well as its online ad business.
