Grimes And Elon Musk Have 'Semi-Separated,' And The Jokes On The Internet Are Good
MUSK BE TOUGH

Well, well, well: after three culturally fraught years, the relationship between Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and music artist Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) has come to an end. They told Page Six that they are "semi-separated," citing the challenges of distance as they both travel and work in different parts of the country, but that they're on good terms and will continue to co-parent their one-year-old son X Æ A-Xii.

Since their debut as a couple at the 2018 Met Gala, the pairing of these two has long bewildered the internet. We had come to know Grimes as a self-proclaimed "anti-imperialist" — a phrase that was in her Twitter bio until around the time she and Musk got together — and a generally unconventional character. For the vast majority of Grimes's fans, and even for other less involved onlookers, it didn't square that she would romantically link herself to someone whose exploits and values seemed so antagonistic to hers. Sure, opposites attract, and culture loves an unusual pairing — but for a lot of people, this couple seemed to cross the line of quirky into something like selling out.

Also, as their values began to clash more publicly, in retrospect it seems inevitable that this unusual union would come to an end.

There was also the time he publicly corrected her about their child's name, which was uncomfortable for everyone.

Anyway: it's over now, or semi-over, and Twitter is alight with jokes and commentary. As strange as it is that the internet always weighs in when a celebrity couple splits up, it feels only fair that a public that had to contend with their very public interactions over time gets to enact some catharsis.

And here's one for everyone out there who neither knows nor particularly cares what's going on with these two:
