In some states, people are spread out more or less evenly among a number of cities and towns. In other states, the geographical distribution of the population is way more lopsided. That's the case in New York, where 41.30% of the population lives in New York City, and in Alaska, where 39.52% of the population lives in Anchorage, as we learned this week from a map created by Redditor u/PiBoy314:

 

In most of the other states, less than 20% of the population lives in the largest city. And there are some outliers on the other end โ€” in South Carolina and West Virginia, less than 3% of the population lives in the largest city. (Incidentally, the largest city in both of those states is called Charleston.) But it's worth highlighting that the city population numbers for this map refer to the population within city limits, not the metropolitan area, and that disadvantages cities like Seattle, which has a small city limit but a fairly populous metropolitan area.
