Xbox 360 returned to the store - with "some" bits missing. Owned.
yougamers.com — This is what you get when you hire clueless people for the service desk. Xbox 360 returned for refund - well, at least the shell of the console is there. And of course nobody admits authorizing the return. Can you say "owned"?

- KrustyTClown, on 11/21/2007, -129/+9The reason I do not own a 360. It will break. Great system with a huge flaw. I wonder how many sales MS loses to the RROD, if it put me off from buying, then how many other people chose not to buy one because of this.
- justice7, on 11/21/2007, -14/+23This is just ignorant flaimbait. I've had my 360 repaired, and since then i've had no issues. I know several people still with launch 360's and no issues. It is hit and miss, just like anything else. People just tend to get a little more upset about the 360 simply because it has the best games and they'd like to be playing them like everyone else. Microsoft has done the right thing here and extended its warranty -- its not up to you to repair it, MS will do it for you.
- RedHerringHack, on 11/21/2007, -18/+10Mostly hit. I bet failure rate is near 100% at the year mark. I own two 360s and both have been to texas. I have a ps3 and wii too.
- creep303, on 11/21/2007, -3/+13Proud day for you and your family.
- evodude, on 11/21/2007, -1/+11You don't have three PS3s, by chance, do you?
- MatchStick, on 11/22/2007, -1/+3as you can see, I DO have 3 PS3s.
- RedHerringHack, on 11/21/2007, -18/+10Mostly hit. I bet failure rate is near 100% at the year mark. I own two 360s and both have been to texas. I have a ps3 and wii too.
- navster15, on 11/21/2007, -12/+11Well, the system is guaranteed for up to three years. In the meantime, I get to play some of the finest games out right now. The high failure rate sucks, but as it is true in this industry, it's all about the games.
- Ajajadude, on 11/22/2007, -2/+3no, the RRoD is guaranteed up to 3 years. Your SOL once the basic warranty expires.
- richlizard24, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Just buy the extended warranty. I think it is around $50 or $60 for a year. So it is like buying a new game every year. Not that bad.
- BearinG, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Nevermind the extended warranty.. the basic one was extended by Microsoft.. didn't they refund those who bought the warranty before the extension too?
- richlizard24, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Just buy the extended warranty. I think it is around $50 or $60 for a year. So it is like buying a new game every year. Not that bad.
- finalfantasyIII, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0Well, after the 3 years are up, I'll set out to buy a PS3.. And I'll be able to afford it by then too. So no loss, only gain.
- Ajajadude, on 11/22/2007, -2/+3no, the RRoD is guaranteed up to 3 years. Your SOL once the basic warranty expires.
- logicalnoise, on 11/21/2007, -6/+30mine is a launch unit and has never faltered. Not everyone has suffered from a RROD
- KrustyTClown, on 11/21/2007, -15/+9Give it a little more time, it is not hit and miss. It is a fact that every 360 is flawed. The heating system was not well thought out and it was rushed, the system heats up causing components on the motherboard to come loose. Every time you turn on your 360, the inside heats up, it may take some longer then others, but I only no two people that have 360s and both have had the RROD multiple times each. It is not a myth and it is not rare. Like I said it's a great system with poor engineering and quality. You say that it did not take long to get it repaired, well it should never have come to that in the first place, why would MS give a 3 year warranty for the RROD if it was not such a problem.
- MrTankJump, on 11/21/2007, -7/+2Because it is a problem, and they have fixed it. Besides, if people that couldn't spell know right would stop putting their 360s in tight confined spaces, or in unnecessarily hot rooms, the RROD wouldn't be anywhere near as big of a problem. You know Sony wouldn't extend their warranty in everyone's PS3s started to break because of dust.
- heinousjay, on 11/22/2007, -1/+1I'm not going to speak to the RROD at all. I just want to point out to you that knowing two people who have 360s does not qualify you to speak on the failure rate.
- MeThePeople, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2my launch console is still running strong. with daily use and the occasional leaving it on for 2 days straight

- coheedcollapse, on 11/21/2007, -1/+37Yeah....that was stupid and unneeded. Even if 360's do fail often, it has literally nothing to do with this thread. I hate when people do this crap on either side of the console argument.
- Tenlow, on 11/21/2007, -5/+2So the 360 fails often? If it's anywhere near as bad as the ps2 failure rate, there might be something to complain about. I think ps2 was 1 failure out of every 4 sold (from my personal sales working at EB games before the 360 came out)
- coheedcollapse, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2Why are you trying to turn this into a flamewar? I wasn't stating that it did or didn't, I was simply saying that even if it WERE true, it has no place at all in this comment section.
- Tenlow, on 11/22/2007, -2/+1Thank you for missing my point.
Just because a console fails more or less than it's competitor means nothing if it has a solid lineup of games. Just like the ps2 had then and the 360 has now.
- Tenlow, on 11/22/2007, -2/+1Thank you for missing my point.
- coheedcollapse, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2Why are you trying to turn this into a flamewar? I wasn't stating that it did or didn't, I was simply saying that even if it WERE true, it has no place at all in this comment section.
- duccodude, on 11/22/2007, -1/+3This topic isn't even about the RROD. Fanboys are just swell..
- Tenlow, on 11/21/2007, -5/+2So the 360 fails often? If it's anywhere near as bad as the ps2 failure rate, there might be something to complain about. I think ps2 was 1 failure out of every 4 sold (from my personal sales working at EB games before the 360 came out)
- AwesomeMonster, on 11/21/2007, -2/+6Just get one now with the fixed heatsinks. Problem solved.
- joejoeself, on 11/21/2007, -2/+5actually microsoft doesnt lose any money, its the retailers that pay microsoft for the consoles, not the consumer.
- UnWeave, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Surely the retailer then just returns the console to MS, and MS then supply them with another one free of charge, overall? They can't make the retailer pay for a console that is broken because of them, so they must be losing money. Even if that isn't the case, the fact that many are being returned (if they were) would probably reduce overall sales. Anyway, to the point, KrustyTClown, your comment has nothing to do with this article other than the words "XBox 360". So, shhh?
- fiftyeggs, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Let's stay current, KrustyTClown.
I need a time machine just to give you a counter point.
- justice7, on 11/21/2007, -14/+23This is just ignorant flaimbait. I've had my 360 repaired, and since then i've had no issues. I know several people still with launch 360's and no issues. - geekfrom99, on 11/21/2007, -1/+137to add insult to injury, that looks like a really boring book.
- MalikNYC, on 11/21/2007, -2/+2Sorry couldnt find a better one...
- Wrathernaut, on 11/22/2007, -5/+6The book, however, probably does not have a 33% failure rate.
- ilikediggalots, on 11/21/2007, -18/+15Ha, I wanted to return my launch 360 for a new one with HDMI. I didn't have the balls to do it... but I still ***** love return policies, beat down the man!
- MrTankJump, on 11/21/2007, -7/+27And raise the price for the rest of us...
- ElAssoWipo, on 11/21/2007, -2/+28If you are still under an exchange warranty (not free repair warranty) here's what you do:
Wrap your xbox in several layers of thick towels, leave the wires hanging out. Plug in the xbox and turn it on. Let it simmer until you get the rings of death.
VoilĂ ! Warranty not void, typical problem, guaranteed return.- Firehed, on 11/22/2007, -16/+3Uhhh... intentionally damaging the system absolutely voids the warranty. They just have no way of proving it.
- Ajajadude, on 11/22/2007, -1/+16As far as Microsoft is concerned, the warranty then isn't voided.
- computergod, on 11/22/2007, -2/+5Um yeah, that's kind of the point.
- gvolt9amer, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2I've tried this. It does not work. What happens is the 360 goes into some kind of emergency mode and shuts off. You'll get the red lights of death at first, but it'll just cool down and work again.
- Firehed, on 11/22/2007, -16/+3Uhhh... intentionally damaging the system absolutely voids the warranty. They just have no way of proving it.
- duccodude, on 11/22/2007, -2/+2050/50 chance of getting new 360 or starting a house fire. I like the odds.
- seanthebond, on 11/21/2007, -0/+28I know that we're like that for Staples. The cashiers do all of the returns, so they dont know what they're looking for. The best one was when somebody returned an empty TV tuner box.
- themoosejuice, on 11/22/2007, -7/+1I'll never shop staples again. They burned me with a gift card once.
- romws, on 11/21/2007, -1/+23Something similar happened to me.
I purchased a 360 on ebay and got a box with bunch of old used Plug & Play games.
I only got $200 back after PayPal disputes tho :(- RedHerringHack, on 11/21/2007, -0/+40Scammers suck.

- AshamedAmerican, on 11/21/2007, -21/+10I don't care if all it's innards have been removed, it will STILL find a way to give you the RROD.
- supremesonic, on 11/21/2007, -11/+55"Can you say "owned"?"
Owned.
Oh hey that was easy!- GeckoSlayer, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2Heh, I'm thinking it could have been an inside job, if you get my drift.
- OptimismPrime, on 11/22/2007, -2/+2Wouldn't "inside job" imply that the government flew 2 remotecontrolled jetliners into the XBox carton and blamed it on middleeastern terrorists?
- GeckoSlayer, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Yes, but in this case, it was the store employees flying 1 unremotecontrolled medical textbook into the xbox console, and blamed it on innocent customers.
- OptimismPrime, on 11/22/2007, -2/+2Wouldn't "inside job" imply that the government flew 2 remotecontrolled jetliners into the XBox carton and blamed it on middleeastern terrorists?

- yaryarhumphump, on 11/21/2007, -14/+4OWNED.... haha
- teamparadox, on 11/21/2007, -22/+3Did they not notice the box weighed nothing? I mean come on! They have to have this person on camera. This is considered theft so call the police, notify other stores to be on the lookout and if possible get the footage on the news to deter other idiots from pulling this same crap. Oh and train your returns people that if it weights less then a shoe chances are something is amiss.
- AshamedAmerican, on 11/21/2007, -0/+18Look at the pics, they put a very thick book inside the 360, giving it considerable weight. Look at it; it's nearly as big as a phone book.
- BakedPigeon, on 11/21/2007, -0/+8Lemme guess you work retail, dont ya?
- mdinire, on 11/21/2007, -0/+7#1 There was a book in it which "probably weighs more than the 360 itself"
#2 Yes he was on camera but are they going to have the culprit's face on every news channel to find him? - darlyn, on 11/21/2007, -2/+1Did you not notice the phonebook-sized text inside the shell?? Any, I agree; I bet they could catch this guy based on surveillance. All the have to do is look for someone moping around longer than normal customers would.
- no3dalefan, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5RTFA,
Thats what the medical book stuffed inside the case was for, to add weight. Looking at the book, it probably weighed MORE that a 360. - evodude, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that thing was as big as some of my chem textbooks, and those things are nothing to laugh at. It probably weighs 10-20 lbs. It'd fool me if I was retarded and lazy, too. I hope they take it out of the paycheck of whoever accepted the return. The weight could have fooled them, but opening the box should have killed that scam.
- Wingnut233, on 11/21/2007, -1/+7Aside from the weight issue, there's nothing that the police would do, either. I worked at a dept. store, and even though I saw people shoplift every day, our security team could not call the police because the security officers themselves didn't see it happen. All they can do is flag that customer, and get them the next time they do something wrong. If you're stupid enough to do it twice, you deserve to get caught.
- Ajajadude, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2It's not like that everywhere. I work at a drug store and we had some kids steal a handle of Jack Daniels, run out the door, jump into a running car, and take off. Luckily, someone working for the company was sitting out in the parking lot, got the license plate number, the cops were called, and showed up to this kid's house. The best part was as the cops were bringing the kid out of his house in handcuffs, the dad showed up.
Priceless.

- joejoeself, on 11/21/2007, -2/+6its not a suprise this happened. Almost any time i return something in a box they never check it, they just take it and assume that the correct item is in there because of the weight. i dont see the point of why he gutted it, i woulda kept the case and just gave them a book.. unless of course he modded it. which he probably did seeing how much of a cheap ass he is.
- Hoody28405, on 11/21/2007, -17/+0lol! Amazing, wonder what the guy did with all the parts... I doubt there is that much you can do with the parts other than the Hard Disk. But thats still pretty worthless.
- FDDIcent, on 11/21/2007, -0/+10Kept the parts and bought an Xbox 360 shell off ebay.
- Antialias, on 11/21/2007, -0/+16play xbox 360 games? He has everything that makes the console work, he doesn't need the plastic case.
- fungule, on 11/21/2007, -0/+13are people really this stupid, god damn
- 4eloBek, on 11/21/2007, -11/+10wn3r3d! well done!
- darlyn, on 11/21/2007, -0/+54Props to the scammer for figuring out exactly when the only employee around would be a petty cashier.
- hydroplane, on 11/21/2007, -1/+5Classic, reminds me of back in the day when some buddys tried to return a Sega 32x box with a humpty hump sculpture inside.
- domokunt, on 11/21/2007, -2/+2So how is that 32x different from standard?
- Firehed, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5It sticks out the top of the Genesis like some misshapen tumor (and, if memory serves, was about as useful).

- jcaino, on 11/21/2007, -2/+1this guy acts like this never happens at his store. *****. years ago i worked at a best buy as a pc tech; those customer service reps only have returns checked like half the time when it's busy.
- someone173406, on 11/21/2007, -8/+2LOL, I love return policies, you can turn a bookstore into a library.
Also, I've heard of weird return stories before. In Hong Kong, a man returned his DVD player, saying it was stuffed with magazines. Unlike here, obviously no one believed him.
Then they realized they were Indian magazines. I don't know what happened after that, but i guess he got the refund. - thebman990, on 11/21/2007, -1/+14it was probably Ben Heckendorn after he turned the thing into a 360 laptop.
- MasterThief117, on 11/21/2007, -8/+2I am curious where you would sell the parts.
- seanc6610, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5Look at that. The "MasterThief" who did it comes to digg to try to fence his stolen 360 parts. how clever.
haha - graemee, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5The guy just needs to buy a third party case. Of course they could contact MS to see where the serial number is & ban it, providing they have the serial number from the original sale.
- ShugNinx21, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2If you look in the pic the back of the shell still has the serial number intact.
- graemee, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Missed that, well time for the b& hammer.

- SaladCactusKing, on 11/21/2007, -0/+9I can say "Defrauded"
- theskunkworks, on 11/21/2007, -0/+43That's nothing. I work for Lowes and once our returns clerk took back a table saw (boxed of course) without getting approval from out department. We found it and opened it to check to see if everything was there, there was a ***** ham inside. Management probably would have been pissed but they couldnt stop laughing.
- breakspirit, on 11/22/2007, -0/+8At the Lowe's in which I work, we frequently get people who will buy a gallon of paint and then try to return it. The reason is that all we can do is put it on sale to try to get rid of it. So, they then rebuy their same paint for like 1/10th of the price. So, we have to mistint every returned paint, which shouldn't be returnable anyway, so that people can't pull that *****. I've seen people come to our desk to look for ***** I sold them before and examine their old, mistinted can.

- itsthebrod, on 11/21/2007, -1/+22It takes balls to return something like that with the possibility of them opening the box and checking its contents...

- tchynerd, on 11/22/2007, -1/+8Well it sounds like they were trying to defraud the company which would be illegal. They would say no but they would also (and should) call the cops! It's a straight up conj ob after all.

- louiedog, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4I went to a Wal-Mart to get a new block and foil for my electric shaver. Well, I actually went to three other stores, but they didn't stock anything for my older model. Wal-Mart had one in stock. The package was poorly taped together and the foil was completely covered in someone's stubble. I'm guessing someone bought a new one and returned the package with his old one inside. This wasn't a box or anything, it was clear plastic. I can't imagine the genius at Wal-Mart who authorized that return, or the guy who reshelved it.
- UncleDavid218, on 11/22/2007, -4/+1Obvious as it is, Wal-Mart employees aren't exactly rocket scientists. It once took me 45 minutes to return a car battery because the retard (literally) didn't know how to use the cash register.
- ChrisXPPro, on 11/21/2007, -10/+1Oh Course Someone Would Do That If They Bought It At Wal-mart!
- SAOSiN, on 11/21/2007, -1/+23Why Are We Capitilizing The First Letter Of Each Word?
- Garafraxa, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5Don't any of you put any value in Comprehensive Medical Assisting!?!
- Devido, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Could be an inside job?
- thefreak, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3I agree!
- copper7op, on 11/22/2007, -11/+2probably not. i know "someone else" who has done this over 10 times at his local walmart. the great thing about walmart is, people dont care. Does some wetback making dollar fifty an hour give a ***** if your stealing? They pay these people 6 bucks an hour, and they create a work force who dont give a *****. so when my friend brings back a recipt for his 360, and it has no hard drive, and no controller, and no guts, they dont care enough to check. You pay cash, keep your recipt, and always get cash back. it actually works pretty well ....
- UncleDavid218, on 11/22/2007, -1/+6Buried for blatant racism... not that I really care.
- essaywhutman, on 11/22/2007, -1/+2I'm having a hard time understanding how the store got "owned" in this matter? Honestly this really didn't take any skill at all, and the person who probably accepted the return really didn't care either way. It's not like this single return sent a shock wave through Best Buy Corporate or anything. When you add that to the fact that they probably have the guys license on file (most stores require it for a return of this size), and his photo from several surveillance cameras it appears he will be the one who eventually gets "owned". Not to mention the fact that the fail rate of 360s are already pretty high, I can imagine they aren't much better without the shell.
- flip360, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2It was Wal-Mart, actually.
- MikeGrenade, on 11/22/2007, -2/+3The only people getting owned here are the rest of us who foot the bill for these kinds of losses when we shop at B&M stores...
- JimJD, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Yeah, and that moron has no trigger finger discipline with that Glock G22.
Dumbass. - thefreak, on 11/22/2007, -0/+6A guy I know once took back a Ray Stephens tape inside of a Nintendo 64 game package. He had somehow managed to reseal the package. At this same time he took back the Nintendo 64 Memory Expansion pack with the old jumper pack inside. The clerks took it back no questions asked apparently. What is really funny though is that the SAME day a friend of mine purchased the Jumper Pack after it was returned to stock and boy was he pissed off. It took him a long time to finally get a refund.
- TheFoolyCooly, on 11/22/2007, -2/+3big ***** deal. NEWS FLASH: people make mistakes, and also THIEVES EXIST
- LloydBentsen, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1well, the difference here is that there were no guns, masks, etc involved here. This story also warrants attention from the digg community because an electronic gaming device in mentioned in the story.
- NeoNightmareX, on 11/25/2007, -0/+1That is true, people make mistakes. I always mistake the insides of a 360 for a book. =P
- maehem, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3At Fry's electronics, they would put it all back in the box and sell it again. I once got a printer that way.
- HumanRecall, on 11/22/2007, -2/+5I wish i had a frontal shot fo this picture :P

- missingnoh4x, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3***** photobucket replaced the images. Damn their bandwidth limits.
- devinmurphy, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3They took it because his "STORE" is Wal-Mart, he didn't protect his photobucket and his pics from work are all over that bitch. I mean, honestly, i wouldn't expect much more out of Wal-Mart. Sorry.

http://s84.photobucket.com/albums/k27/drummer8946/ ... - robfrench, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1See, now for each time there's an article about a store not accepting a harddrive back when the customer claims they opened it up to find a brick, there's 50 of these. I only worked in retail a little bit, and I've seen this and worse plenty, but never an alleged legitimate brick in a box. So everytime people freak out over a store not taking a customers word, this is why.
Sure, you'll say they can suck it up for customer satisfaction, but they can't make that their policy. The moment they do it will be exploited to no end. I hate big box retail stores as much as the next guy, but this isn't creative or cool... just someone being a dick. - TheDiggerz, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Oh, so that's where I left my book..
- webtroll, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1The more correct headline/description would have been: Xbox 360 box returned to the store - with some Xbox in it.
- podrag, on 11/22/2007, -1/+1Can you say 'Can you say'?
- forsetifox, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1This really doesn't surprise me. I worked at CompUSA in AZ and we got a Maxtor HD returned with dirty socks in the box. If employee's don't care to follow proper procedures and managers don't enforce them. This is what you get.
- MethodOne, on 11/23/2007, -1/+0I bought a copy of Doom 3 at Wal-Mart and got no CDs in the box. I took it back to exchange it for a new copy, but they refunded my money because the store didn't have it in stock. Last time I checked, they only had the expansion pack.
- tehviruss, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0What I find stupid is since it was so obviously not the real thing, why did they even include the case? At first glance anyone could see something was wrong, so now whoever "stole" that 360 has a bit of a problem with it...
