Ready for The $1,000,000 Halo 3 Competition?
gamingbits.com — The Cyberathlete Professional League will be holding a million dollar Halo 3 tournament from December 18 to December 22 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, Texas. $1,000,000 has been deposited to a designated bank account for prize payment, making it the largest videogame competition ever.

- durru7, on 10/30/2007, -23/+18Two points.
One: It sucks that other games like UT3, CS1.6 and other great titles are being pushed aside by Halo3 just because of Halo's popularity. There are people in some communities that have been playing long than Halo has even been out. Halo already has a great league (MLG), don't see why they need this competition.
Two: Getting your money from CPL if you win is highly unlikely. They've been struggling for the past two years and I highly doubt they will pay up or at least pay up in time.- Nicksname1, on 11/03/2007, -7/+27Your an idiot. Halo 3's popularity is exactly why it gets this huge competition. No body is going to be able to organize an event and get proper sponsorship for something that would draw a crowd and competitors 1/10 the size of what a Halo 3 competition would draw. I admit Unreal is awesome but not nearly as big of a community. But your 2nd point is good whoever wins this better ask for the money immediately.
- jnv123, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1MLG actually pays http://www.mlgpro.com/?q=node/165034&page=9&query= ...
- chris9902, on 10/30/2007, -9/+5So they should use a game nobody likes? UT3 isn't out and CS is OLD! Nobody wants to watch CS 1.6. That ***** looks like ass and is dominated by a bunch of nerds who have done nothing but play it for the past 10 years.
- treas, on 10/31/2007, -8/+5Actually, cs (1.6 and source) have the largest professional community of any game to date. Plenty of people want to watch it.
CS is the model that all other competitive games should be built upon.- chris9902, on 10/31/2007, -2/+12no, plenty of other CS 1.6 players want to watch it.
And while I agree CS is a very good game I don't think it should be used as a model. It's just not very exciting.
- chris9902, on 10/31/2007, -2/+12no, plenty of other CS 1.6 players want to watch it.
- treas, on 10/31/2007, -8/+5Actually, cs (1.6 and source) have the largest professional community of any game to date. Plenty of people want to watch it.
- xerus, on 10/30/2007, -9/+2I agree. Halo, and other console games, blow for competitive play. They really should be investing in eSports games like CS, UT, hell, bring back Quake 3 since there hasn't been anything good since...
- awok, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5As an avid Quake 3 player I am obligated to respond.
Games like CS 1.6 (which all the pro's from back in the day still play), and Quake 3 CPMA are great games in their own right, and not so much CS but Quake 3, they are games for gamers.. if you know what I mean. They are just not spectator friendly to anymore than a specific niche of players.
Games like Halo 3 have done amazing things for E-Gaming and sponsors will pile in money like they are now so some lucky kid can win a prize fund of $250'000 cash.
And just to make it clear, it takes as much skill to be good, and I mean really good at Halo 3 using a joypad as it does playing CS with a mouse+kb.
Just different..
- awok, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5As an avid Quake 3 player I am obligated to respond.
- falkonv7l, on 10/31/2007, -4/+1Halo 3 has done great things for the gaming industry in terms of media, but people (real gammers) are out their making 40k a year playing Counter Strike and such.
- ghosttown80, on 10/30/2007, -2/+3Gammers, huh?
- falkonv7l, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3its still early, I would rather make a typo on digg than here at work.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1Ah *****. I can't believe you've done this.
- ghosttown80, on 10/30/2007, -2/+3Gammers, huh?
- anw13, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1continuing to play 1.6 with games like UT3 and TF2 on the market is only hurting the gaming community.
Besides, 1.6 isnt being "pushed aside," they are having a a $50,000 tournament for that as well. This is because they realize that it does have the largest competitive gaming audience and they have to appeal to them as well as newer gamers.
- Nicksname1, on 11/03/2007, -7/+27Your an idiot.
- foxhaze, on 10/30/2007, -10/+2I'm ready to not join the competition, not play Halo 3, and not win $1,000,000, if that's what the article means to suggest.
- Reponere, on 10/30/2007, -1/+6I wish MLG.pro would get on the Halo 3 ball and start their own tournaments. If the MLG pros aren't in this tourney, then I don't think I'm ready for it...
- jnv123, on 11/02/2007, -1/+4MLG pros will likely attend and win this tournament. Some pros I've talked to don't like attending some of the other tournaments though, Nistic told me he still hasn't gotten paid from a tournament last year.
- noamchomskeet, on 10/31/2007, -3/+1Many of the MLG Pro's arent' even touching Halo 3 yet, because of the major Halo 2 competitions still underway before the year ends. Only a few have been playing it, but are afraid to lose their Halo 2 skills. Btw, things are changing in the MLG competitions, for the first time, Final Boss lost out to Carbon for the championship.
- Wohmfg, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Woooohh, hang on a sec. The MLG Halo 2 season is over, Final Boss won the last national championship. Final Boss lost LAST YEAR to Carbon in the national championship. Everyone knows that MLG will pick up Halo 3 for the 08 season, and yes they will be practising, the only reason they won't turn up to other tournaments is because some of them have MLG-only contracts.
- Speedy7, on 10/30/2007, -10/+5I am going to win this Tournament and buy 25000 PS3s with the money!
- xvertigox, on 10/30/2007, -3/+5Wow, Halo 3? What the hell is Angel thinking?
- Frostman3D, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10As often as I have my ass beat down by those bastards that snipe from the hip in mid jump, no... I'm just not ready.
- austin63, on 10/30/2007, -2/+3Wouldnt that just make it the largest prize, not the largest competition?
- shortarabguy, on 10/30/2007, -3/+3I think you're right... We can't possibly fathom the magnitude of the popularity of Starcraft in Asia, specifically South Korea.
- orlyfactor, on 10/30/2007, -9/+4I'm going to recruit Fred Savage to play on my team...
- Exhaust, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Nobody can beat the WIZARD!! He knows where all the warp whistles are!
- orlyfactor, on 10/30/2007, -7/+1I'm going to go recruit Fred Savage.
- orithidon, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1I'm going.
- scabbers, on 10/30/2007, -3/+2I'm trying to work out how the organisers are going to make a profit...
- nopointinnames, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6Each person pays to get in and sponsorship deals would be my best guess. And the way Microsoft promotes, I'm sure they might have thrown in a nice bribe to make Halo the 1 million dollar game.
- diggless, on 10/30/2007, -2/+1they will probably pay out the million in an annuity. This will allow them to sit on the cash from the event and dole it out to the winner over the next 20 years.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/30/2007, -3/+3RTFA
- diggless, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3perhaps if the article would load that would be possible.
- scabbers, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Exactly!
- diggless, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3perhaps if the article would load that would be possible.
- LaueOfficer, on 10/30/2007, -3/+3RTFA
- Speedy7, on 10/30/2007, -3/+2Up step 360 Fanboys...
- nico623, on 10/30/2007, -1/+10Now we all have an excuse for quitting or jobs, moving back into our parents basement, and playing video games months on end.
Hooray :D ! - LaueOfficer, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3So..... expect hell on this server at Noon, Central.
- jun2san, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2It sucks that the top halo teams are contracted with MLG which means they can only play in MLG tournaments. I hope that MLG will allow them to at least play in this one tournament and take CPL's money.
- jnv123, on 10/30/2007, -0/+0Some of them can, the million dollar contracts might interfere, but they probably have something in there about being allowed to take another leagues money.
- ripstuntz, on 10/30/2007, -5/+2What makes this competition even better is the fact that all of the Halo 2 pros received their copies of Halo 3 a month or two before everyone else.
Way to level the playing field...- bejayel, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4Yeah, cause there is any difference from Halo 2 to Halo 3, graphics aside..
- leetninja, on 10/30/2007, -7/+6so you have to be over the age of 18 to compete since there is a cash prize - i guess that eliminates about 98% of halo players ...
- jnv123, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1Probably a parent release form...
- gglynn07, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2So you're saying there's a chance!!!!
- DiggzDE, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1Yes, I have a chance!
- BlackJackJester, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1not the ones who can pay the $275-$400+ entry fee they have to hock up
- JeyNyce, on 10/30/2007, -6/+3I'm waiting for the COD 4 competition. PC, not 360.
- ssjasper2003, on 10/30/2007, -4/+0Didnt they close the gaming league or whatever it was cause there werent enough viewers?
- th3space, on 10/30/2007, -8/+2Oh boy. Another event being held in Dallas that will only serve to make me hate this city more.
- jun2san, on 10/30/2007, -6/+1I don't think halo 3 is ready for competitive play yet. The maps are too large for 4v4 and there are no arena maps available yet. Also, bungie needs to fix a few small things such as the melee system. Also, it would suck if CPL did not start with the battle rifle.
- jun2san, on 10/31/2007, -5/+1If your digging me down, your a n00b
- jnv123, on 10/30/2007, -1/+1It doesn't matter if your right, presentation matters. Your the one who looks like an idiot here, even if you have an opinion which is shared by many top players.
- jun2san, on 10/31/2007, -5/+1If your digging me down, your a n00b
- 2shae, on 10/30/2007, -3/+1To bad it's not done on Xbox Live...like I'm gonna fly all the way over to Dallas.
- shadydentist, on 10/30/2007, -1/+0A lot of tournaments with a major prize are done over lan. If you're not willing to travel, you're not going to make it as a pro gamer.
- Invalice, on 10/30/2007, -2/+2wow
- LogicBomB, on 10/30/2007, -3/+1Canada gets the shaft on game competitions. I'm so very frustrated that I have to go half way around the damned continent to compete in anything. Toronto is eventually getting the MLG which isn't bad but you'd think there would be more of a Canadian presence seeing as how we're just as wired, if not moreso, than the US :/
- gibsonic, on 10/31/2007, -2/+5our country is doomed.
- Duncast, on 10/31/2007, -2/+1If its a winner takes all prize, then yes it is the biggest video game comp in history, but I doubt 1 winner gets the whole million. Anyone ever heard of the 'make something unreal' contests for UT'99 and UT'03? They had $1mil in prizes. Granted it wasn't a tournament, but it was still a 'gaming competition'.
- dvide, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3The prize breakdown is given in the article. $250,000 for first place. But even 64th place gets $2,500. The CPL also held a $1mil painkiller 1v1 tournament. The top two players Vo0 and Fatal1ty both won around $250,000 by the end of the year.
- DiggzDE, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2The cash prize distribution for the $1,000,000 “Halo 3? Xbox 360 competition is:
$250,000.00 - 1
$170,000.00 - 2
$100,000.00 - 3
$75,000.00 - 4
$50,000.00 - 5
$40,000.00 - 6
$30,000.00 - 7
$25,000.00 - 8
$15,000.00 - 9 thru 12
$10,000.00 - 13 thru 16
$5,000.00 - 17 thru 32
$2,500.00 - 33 thru 64
- EliteNcriptioN, on 10/30/2007, -2/+2Good Thing I Live in Dallas. I'll be there with bells on and an ink pen in hand to sign my check. T_T gamertag:EliteNcriptioN
- sup34dog, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2you expect to rank?
- gimlik, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7I don't think my wife would understand if I quit my job and told her it was to train for a Halo competition...
- thesheqq, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4Wow, now instead of just taking up most my time it will take up all my time. Anybody have any idea how many people are expected?
- XtremeBain, on 10/30/2007, -1/+2First prize is $250,000. The CPL still owes gamers prize money dating back a few years though.
- CollapseControl, on 10/31/2007, -1/+2What kind of tourney is it? Free-for-all? 4v4? 1on1? I can't read the article.
If it is a FFA or 1on1 it is pretty pointless. The whole fun of Halo is playing team based games. Anyone can win or do good at a FFA given luck with spawns.- AlexDenne, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1wrong, very wrong, play Lone wolves at level 45 and then tell me it doesn't require skill mate.
- CollapseControl, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I never said it takes no skill and would be a walk in the park, but anyone can do good given the right situation (spawn)
- AlexDenne, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1wrong, very wrong, play Lone wolves at level 45 and then tell me it doesn't require skill mate.
- gglynn07, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5So...is there a prize for the most times killed in a round...Cause if so, I'll win that one hands down;)
- dolemite5005, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7Costs $500 to register! Thanks but no thanks.
- wiggimt, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1Over the years, participants and BYOC'ers have always paid 80-100 dollars for their spot. 475 (or 275 for early-birds) for a 4-person team isn't bad.
- wiggimt, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1Ok, I lied, I guess it's not teams like last year...but CPL's site is down to confirm
- wafflesomd, on 10/31/2007, -5/+4Halo 3 is such a terrible competition game.
- DiggzDE, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8How can I ever finish the fight if they keep having competitions?!
- wilsonthecat, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Ready for daily Halo 3 spam (advertising) on digg?
- ctc1219, on 10/31/2007, -3/+0I don't play halo 3 that much.
I have much more fun playing Team Fortress 2 and Guitar Hero 3.
Soon I will not play Halo 3 at all when Cod4 come out.- Seifey, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1Cool.
- killdashnine, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1It's good to see opportunities, but it's a little troubling. Despite the CPL enabling it, they're deferring to some "new e-sports management company" instead. This "X Factor" company doesn't seem to have an official web page and it's unclear where such money is coming from.
Check their original Google-cached website:

It seems that most of the money is coming from admission, which for gamers is more than a bit steep. - CPLPress, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1The online registration was launched today. See press release at: http://www.thecpl.com/?p=1873
