Halo 3 may ship without online co-op play.
joystiq.com — Apparently the online co-op play may not be 4 player as rumored and may not exist at all. Although there is still hope that it will be patched in later.

- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -11/+71With Microsofts record it will probably be added later as a $10 Live microtransaction because thousands will probably buy it.
- CraigCarlyle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Thousands?
Only? - inajeep, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1If it's only thousands then they failed. I think the people who want online coop are outnumbered by a whole lot who don't care but are more vocal.

- eschompthis, on 10/11/2007, -22/+7NO IT WONT! stop with these tupid ***** rumors already and wait for the game.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5So when the word comes from the lips of Bungie's #1 public figure, it's a rumor?
- asif5th, on 10/11/2007, -5/+52If this actually happens, it's a huge ***** disappointment.
- Baku, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13True, but if I'm honest I'd rather they add it later, and do it right... than rush it and ***** it up.
- jeepnut24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4How about wait to release the game until it works correctly??? They better have it as this was SERIOUSLY lacking from 2. Talk about a MAJOR let down.
- FrostRaven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yea, I'd rather them add it later over a bad rushed version. But what i dont want is to have to pay for it. Charging another 10 or 15 for an online co-op mode would be a huge ***** up in my opinion. Adding it free later? Ok. Charging for it later? Hell no. I'll wait to buy the game to find out what the plan is first.
- Echuta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4This would be a deal breaker for me. Any inkling of desire I have to buy this game would be gone.

I found it amazing that people consider this acceptable, they are basically shipping a broken game- Sairgem, on 10/11/2007, -18/+2Since when does not having online coop make a game broken? I wouldn't go near a Wii if I were you.

- TheNik, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8Halo 2 didn't have online co-op and look at it's sales.
I could care less about the feature, co-op requires listening to the people on the other end, something that I don't want to do with the majority of XBL users.- Scheissen, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4"Halo 2 didn't have online co-op and look at it's sales."
First off, it's "its," not "it's."
Sales? Since when did gamers play a game based on sales? Halo2 sucks in comparison of Halo.- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"Since when did gamers play a game based on sales?"
So did these gamers you speak of buy Halo 2 then not play it or something? - Baku, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1@ Scheissen,
I love that you correct him/her on their grammar, then make the same mistake yourself.- imikedaman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4it's is a contraction for "it is".
its is the possessive form of it.

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I dunno about broken, but if they ship it this way, the Halo faithful will be somewhat disappointed.
Co-op is fun.- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2and still works just fine via split screen or LAN.
- snapcase, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I find it rather annoying to say the very least that console developers are now taking up the same bad habits of PC game developers. On many PC games you have the mindset of "we've developed enough, we'll fix the bugs later after launch", when traditionally on console games there was no patching so you had to make damn sure the game was finished before launching. Now with all the major consoles having "live"/online capabilities, they are getting lazy with making sure the game is ready for launch and delaying if necessary, and instead they are now deciding to launch their games unfinished to be patched at a later time. Honestly when this kind of thing happens with either a PC game or console game, I find that I feel a little ripped off when I buy it. When I rush out to a store to buy a game the day it is released only to find out that I'm only getting half of what I payed for, for the few months or more that it will take them to patch it, how can I feel anything BUT ripped off. In my opinion, developers of both PC and console games need to get back into the mindset that they have to finish before the launch even if it means delaying the launch until it's done.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Completely agree. I wish this "ship it crappy and fix it in the gold/GOTY edition later" didn't even happen on PCs, let alone on consoles.
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1better than waiting for HALO 4(which according to bungie is never coming).
- cplex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Bungie never stated that Halo 4 isn't coming... Just that Halo 3 is the conclusion of the current story arc.
- jake8689, on 10/11/2007, -16/+5so a feature that should of been in halo 2 is not going be out on halo 3 day one, that is who should i put this really ***** stupid

Wow, until you can create a simple, coherent statement I don't think you're in any point to call any one else 'stupid.' - Nobi-Wan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2And it's "should HAVE" not "should OF." How does that make sense? Before you type something, think about what your sentence means instead of the way it sounds.

this sucks, this should have been a given feature in the game since day one - MasterInsan0, on 10/11/2007, -14/+7Sadly enough, this IS what will happen, because Bungie is one of the biggest offenders in the "ship the game now, patch it later" philosophy. They didn't finish the story in Halo 2, so they cut it off and shipped what they had. In essence, Halo 3 is the biggest, most expensive "patch" ever, as its purpose is to "finish the fight" -- as in, finish the story they WERE going to finish in Halo 2 had they had the time.
Even ignoring that, though, Bungie is being pressed VERY hard to get the game out before the Holiday season so that the hardcore will rush out and buy it in September, and then all the annoying kids will have their parents get it for them for Christmas, along with another 12-month Xbox Live Gold card. This is to help prevent shortages, of course, because if there is a shortage, MS and Bungie aren't making as much money as they will be splitting it up. Because of the pressure, it seems only logical that they are cutting features they don't have time to finish so that they can get the actual game out in a state polished enough to get the universal 10's it will likely get either way from game critics. Reviewers won't pan the lack of online co-op, but they sure as hell will the lack of polish.- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2They didn't finish Halo 1 either. The repetitive levels at the end (the library being the most obvious) were because they were low on content because they ran out of time to get it done.
Although I have to say I think that shipping Halo 1 unfinished (but on launch day for Xbox) was the right idea. It really made a difference for Xbox.
But I'm not so sure about Halo 2, as it wouldn't have hurt the Xbox to delay it a few months more.- MasterInsan0, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Had they delayed Halo 2 any more, it would have missed the holiday season.
- 1iProd, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1From what I heard, it was Microsoft that had Bungie rush to get the game out, thus the incompleteness.

- Pix869, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3What the hell? They aren't including online play because they don't want situations where one player sucks and is left behind etc?
I say who cares! If someone sucks so much they can't keep up, you shouldn't be co-oping with them anyway.
God damnit, that was a big part of the sale for me. - MasterThief117, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Oh thank god. Now I don't have to create a book of excuses on why I am constantly late for school every day.

What's wrong with that?- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Halo 2 didn't have online co-op, and you still managed to talk to your friends. - t.toe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I seem to recall a "feature" in Halo 2's co-op where, if one player starts lagging behind, the system "warps" them to the player in the lead. Yes, I'm aware this was done during load-times, simply because it was absolutely impossible to keep two of the Halo 2 environments loaded into the X-Box's hardware at a time, but who's to say they couldn't set slightly more arbitrary "warp points" for Halo 3's online co-op?
Certainly they've thought of this, and that's why I don't buy Frank O'Conner's quote in the article.- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Why not just come up with a makeshift reason as to why two players can't get that far apart (just cleverly blend it into the story)... Say if a player is out of range of a team mate, they die...
Sure this is a band aid solution (and a little sucky), but I am sure most would argue this would be better than no co-op at all! - Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Whatever happened to the trusty old "You must gather your party before venturing forth" solution?
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think the point is that Bungie doesn't want to resort to hacks like that. The warping thing with Halo 2 got really annoying sometimes. You'd be right next to someone and then you'd warp for some random reason.
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Why not just come up with a makeshift reason as to why two players can't get that far apart (just cleverly blend it into the story)... Say if a player is out of range of a team mate, they die...
- NerdVicious, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3It'll ship without an online play mode. Bungie won't put money in development when they know they'll sell plenty of copies regardless.
At least they could do us the decency of not using some lame excuse like, "we have a situation where you can be in a Warthog with five troops, almost a mile away from the other player."- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is probably the stupidest comment I've seen today: "Bungie won't put money in development when they know they'll sell plenty of copies regardless."
How is that a lame excuse? The point is that syncing all that data when really strain a lot of Internet connections. It's already working over LAN, because they have plenty of bandwidth.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is probably the stupidest comment I've seen today: "Bungie won't put money in development when they know they'll sell plenty of copies regardless."
- dvsbastard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It'll be a dman shame if they don't include co-op in the final build, as I have a love affair with ANY kind of online co-op game (I find it more fun teaming up with friends, then blasting away at them), but bungie are perfectly capable, so if it is not included I am sure it's just technically impossible (in the project time frame at least)...
But if network technical limitiations weren't a issue, I would LOVE to see games with 8... or 16 player co-op... but alas somethings just can't be done...- toppgun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1graw has that. I dont think it is campaign coop, but it is still coop

Have I been missing out on this the whole time? Please, tell me why it is so important to have your submission on the front page.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1What the hell are you talking about? Maybe I would be jealous if I had submitted an article about the same thing but hey, I DIDN'T. Hell, even if I had submitted a similar story jealousy would still not apply to the previous comment I made.

- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4If you actually read the article, you'd see it is Frank O'Conner of Bungie who suggests this will be the case.

- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4ONLINE co-op get it f'n straight. There's still co-op but there isn't enough bandwidth to support online co-op because 1 player could be literally miles from the other in the game maps. Maybe they made the single player campaign too big but the reality is that for now it isn't worth shipping with a broken feature.
- doctordbx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Hey, if Apple is allowed to release a telephone drastically short of features, then Bungie is allowed to release a Game missing a couple.

- Hoinah, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Ok again this comes down to the idea that you are "owed" something. Yeah Bungie said there would be 4 player co-op over Live, but that doesn't mean the game is incomplete or ***** without it. If they want to be able to cease delaying the game yet again, they may have to cut something. So 4player cp over live goes, since its not gamebreaking, and again, you're not entitled to it, you don't "have a right to 4 player co-op" so get over it. That said, I really hope Bungie fixes it in time, I was really looking forward to it.
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Yeah Bungie said there would be 4 player co-op over Live"

Buried. - StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Ok all of you need to shut the ***** up. None of you are game developers so you have no right to bash Bungie about anything. I'm majoring in Game Development and there's some things that you guys don't understand that happens behind the scenes. As a developer you need to stress test the game and see what works and what doesn't. You also need to see what would happen if you changed one thing in the game and see how it would break the rules. Some times you'll put something in that you think is a great idea from the beginning but then when you add something else it conflicts with the other set of rules for that one particular thing. The same thing goes for the co-op online play. Bungie could have possibly had it working right but then there was maybe a few more things to patch to get it in the final stage but those things could have conflicted with some other things in the game and could have completely changed the gameplay. What would you guys rather want a game that has a horrible online co-op that you will all bitch and complain about and wish they never included it unless it was finished or would you rather want a game that ships with out it and the developer does what they can to to get that portion of the game out YOU the FANS through an update? Most developers would not do this at all. So please do everyone a favor and calm down. Bungie did not have to try to make this work. They could have simply said "It doesn't work and were not going to try to make it. Sorry guys!". At least they are trying! Remember they have deadlines and unfortunately these deadlines make them have to rush and scrap certain things they want to include the game. Co-op is not one of the major concerns. The gameplay, graphics, online experience, and gameplay is more important to get polished and working properly then implementing something like gameplay. You guys can't have it two ways all the time. Again would you guys rather want a ***** online co-op mode that you'll complain about or have them add it as an update later on? Geez be greatful you ***** brats!
- cplex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, ever heard of paragraphs?
- 7thton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1My question is....can you still play head to head (versus)?
- Hangender, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"We're not dumb. We know that people want it, and we are going to make them pay hella $$$$ for it. Its our new business model." Bungie's Frank O'Conner
- insaneidiot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Come on, guys, is it really THAT hard to grab your controller, walk/drive to a friend's house, and sit down in the same room as them to play a game together? Jeez...
- MCHampster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3When they live 6 states away from you, yes.
You see, some of us don't live with our parents anymore.

- MrHawkins, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1To all the people complaining about this: I would rather not have this if Bungie can't get it right. Rembmer the size of the levels? We're talking miles and miles here. Yeah, I want this stuff, but since we're dealing with next-gen, one would imagine there would be less load occurances. So, if I want co-op, I'll do it the old fashioned way (and in my opinion, the better way). I'll hand a controller to my friend.
Also, buried for duplicate. - HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Well, I have to say I'm disgusted some crew (Xbots?) has come in here and dugg down every comment from a person who says that they would be a disappointment.
If you think shipping without this feature isn't a cause for concern you're kidding yourself. -
