- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -4/+74"Why haven't they made the Halo movie yet?"
Because the budget skyrocketed to larger than the gross of any video game movie.
Because the financiers didn't want a $200 million film to be directed by a person who has never worked on a major movie in any capacity (directing two 10-minute shorts, and doing special effects on TV shows don't inspire confidence in financiers)
Because the movie is based on video game hype and is not an established film franchise
Because Microsoft and Bungie (companies with no movie-making experience) demanded high percentage points, full creative control, but wanted the studios to finance 100% of the film
Because everyone who bought a Halo game would have to see the movie 6 times each before the studios began to make a profit
Because the movie Eragon flopped. The movie was based on a series with a similar sized fan-base, directed by a major special effects director with no film-directing experience, had the best special effects house working on it (ILM), big star power (Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich), financed by Fox, and a $120+ million budget.
Because studios have made other movies with large internet hype, rabid fan bases, and cool special effects which failed at the box office: Serenity, Snakes on a Plane, Eragon, Superman Returns etc.
As as video game fan, you may be very excited for this movie to be made. But that alone won't convince the studios to make it after they have been burned in the past. - ch4os1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40They were brute spiker spikes not needlers
- luke16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36needs a bigger budget...
- oofgeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33I want to see a live action Master Chief in one of these videos.
- Bara, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32There's one thing all of those other movies didn't have: Peter Jackson. That in and of itself should make a big difference on whether or not this movie will tank. Just seeing "Peter Jackson" anywhere high up in the credits or trailers will spark a lot of interest for this movie, especially by the LotR crowd.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27As awesome as this is, I do not understand why the Pelican does not just air lift them out.
- cool8man, on 10/10/2007, -7/+27I love all the digital effects from WETA. The Brutes, Pelican, and Warthog all look great. The shakey cam and constant camera changes made me feel sick though. Looks a little bit drab too. Why not have some color in needler spikes?
- mageofdeath, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24that was amazing, someone needs to fund this movie now, I say if we all send bungie a check for 5 dollars, we might be able to do it...
- MadTom, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22As a large Halo fan, The video was great. Yet Almost loses the Halo feel.
- teamparadox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18While I agree with all your points, the combined gross of ticket sales, dvd sales and hd-dvd sales would more then make them profit. You have an established fanbase of millions, plus the movie would probably go mainstream due to the hype and news coverage it would get.
Then its pretty much a lock every single person who owned an xbox or 360 would buy the DVD and any future special extended cuts. This movie is a win situation...and for the record Eragon sucked and everyone knew it before its release. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Because they weren't done finishing the fight.
- TheDrinkNinja, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Were we really worried about Blomkamp as a director? Because I think this pimp-slaps any doubt I had.
- SPARTACVS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12You're mistaken. As soon as the movie finds funding again, Peter Jackson will again take up the role of Executive Producer.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11"Produced by Peter Jackson" doesn't have nearly the same weight as "Directed by Peter Jackson," though.
- tatltat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12It need funding... so far it looks like it was made in a paintball arena.
- reasonyousmile, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Am I the only one who thinks they shoulda got the guys from Red Vs. Blue to do the voices?
- oxdeltaxo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I didn't even know what Eragon was, looked gay so I didn't bother.
- FuzzyC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It is a real Warthog [ http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/combat_pt1_behindthescenes/images/IMG_1699_VAB.jpg ] and two ODSTs [ http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/combat_pt1_behindthescenes/images/IMG_1681_VAB.jpg ].
- mageofdeath, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I would for the halo movie...
- EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Why does the warthog sound like an RC? They really need to beef it up, or atleast make it SOUND beefed up. They also need to stray away from the "Black Hawk Down" feel and get back to the "Halo" look. Other than that it looked pretty good.
- orca94, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Wait, what? Since when did Eragon and Halo have the same sized fan base? Or anything remotely near the same sized fan base?
- jdugan83, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Im confused at how you compare the fanbase of Eragon and Halo? Also, there are plenty of IPs that are made into movies based on 2-4 million people buying the book and 75 million going into the funding of the movie. You take Halo fans, who are extremely vocal, play a game daily for years. You have readers, whom may not be as vocal, spend only a portion of their time to conquer the book, and bam, they dunzo. Two different crowds your preaching about boss. I think you make some good points, but some are weak at best. A huge problem financiers are going to have with this movie is the accessories that will be sold based off this movie (Which it looks like they will make zilch off of). Take Matrix for example and checkout how much money they made off of things besides the movie sales alone. Huge Huge Huge.
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -2/+9Would you pay $15 for a movie at the theater? That's essentially what you're proposing.
- dpl_, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yeah, it's way too gritty. The games are so much more vibrant and colorful (not a knock at all against the series, I like the art style in the games).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Buried for use of "ZOMG" and not linking to GameTrailers.com
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/24179.html - knodi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8WOW that was ***** bad ass!!!
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8The movie studios had full control over Doom as well as every other video game movie, and look how that turned out. There is no way in hell Bungie or MS should let Hollywood do to Halo that they have done to every other video game movie.
- thrallie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Uh, no it wouldn't. It's called live action..if you want it with the Halo 3 engine..just play Halo 3.
- FoxtrotUSAF, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The Halo movie hasn't been made yet because studios don't want to be forced to follow Bungie's Halo bible. Good for Bungie! If the movie studios got to make the Halo movie they wanted we'd get another ***** Starship Troopers movie. And if you say, "But Starship Trooper was a cool movie" then you need to get back to work flippin my damn burgers!
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I called it a "fiasco" for a reason. Jackson has been on and off the project so many times there is no telling who is directing it at this point. As of this month, New Line is trying to get him back on it due to their many failures.
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-et-goldstein10aug10,0,7800308.story?coll=la-headlines-entnews
FTA "Eager to move ahead with "The Hobbit," New Line has quietly been trying to mend fences with "Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson, who has sued the company over his share of profits from the first "Rings" films. When asked if it was true that company insiders had been in talks with Jackson's reps, Shaye replied, "Yes, that's a fair statement. Notwithstanding our personal quarrels, I really respect and admire Peter and would love for him to be creatively involved in some way in 'The Hobbit.' " - whiteguysamurai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I vote for Alfonso Cuarón,(children of men) he has the same docu-drama feel, but is better at handling backstories, where Blomkamp may expect you to know it all.
Either way, it needs to be done. - MalDON, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be-daI6Hnv8
I don't care for the Gametrailers player. It's always buggy for me. - tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Is the Eragon fanbase actually as big as the Halo one? Seems unlikely. Anyway, even if it's not good to Hollywood, I think giving Bungie creative control is key. Movies go bad when the people making them don't understand the subject matter.
- FuzzyC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3WETA built them for the Halo 3 shorts [ http://kotaku.com/gaming/ridin-dirty/weta-warthog-suspended-290650.php ].
- jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing lol
- jedikv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Mortal Kombat 1 movie was awesome - still the only good game-to-movie adaptation.
- cplex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Umm, read the books? There's enough halo story to make at least three movies. Three damn good movies if done right too.
- cplex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah, HD sucks. The Youtube player is much better!
- RMoore08, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It seems like they were going for a Gears of War feel. Or if you have seen the CoD 4 trailer, it was kinda similar to that too.
- Schwab, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Watch what you are calling a failure. Serenity did not fail at all, it made its money back in box office, not by much, but it did. And by DVD sells is surpassed it greatly. Joss has a loyal fan base to make enough money to keep a series alive.
- Toinsane2b, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I hate when Brutes attack me on my way to a paintball game...
- stillmitch, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Sweet, but it doesn't really feel anything like Halo. This style would better suit a Gears of War movie.
- Flun, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well they are ODST or "Helljumpers", who have similar behaviour as the GoW characters.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1wow did you make that up or did you find it at the same place as bungee found the halo story line!
- HeatVision, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2They should do the the movie all CG in the same style as the "Starry Night" commercial. Neill's work doesn't feel like Halo to me, despite having a worthog and Brutes in it.
- byronm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I want to see a short showing an attack of the flood. See how they pull THAT off
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2These shorts are being made Bloomkamp and Weta, Peter Jackson is still very much attached to any Halo project.
- taxman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2After seeing videogames turned movies such as Doom,Uwe boll classics,Mortal combat etc, it warms my heart that the movie is stalled. Unless Bungie is given most of the creative rights and not the studios, only then should a movie be considered.
What differentiates Halo from other VG movies is its deep sci-fi universe created in the games and more importantly the books. If they treat the halo universe as a book plus game, and not dominate the movie with useless and random action scenes, it stands a chance of being as good as Serenity or Matrix. - ebjonerud, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4If I can be honest...as a person who is a HUGE movie fan and a moderate Halo fan (I like it, but not enough to have any kind of bias when watching these shorts), I think that kind of sucked.
It looked like a cheap, crappy action movie. Now I know it's low budget and all and with some more money, they could do more...but I thought that was pretty terrible; not just the quality, but the setup and feel of it...I DEFINITELY don't feel it warrants reactions like "ZOMG MAKE THAT MOVIE NOW" or "THAT LOOKS F*#&@NG AMAZING."
It's way better than the first short from E3 (which I thought was pure crap), but after seeing both of these...I'm not convinced that Blomkamp has any idea what he's doing.
Like I said, I know it's low budget and all...but I'd expect so much more from MYSELF directing it, let alone a man who was about to be handed the reins to a $200 million movie. - cplex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Were is Master Chief? Wha?
