- GhettoLevis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27This isn't about modded consoles, this is about some COD4 beta exploit.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22If they really didn't ban all those people for 24 hours then the Microsoft gaming division is run by pussies.
- benitojuarez, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19I'm digging you down for being a whiney bitch ass. Reread what you typed. You said you liked the game and want to possibly buy it, but now you don't think you're going to buy it because they didn't let you play the beta as long as you think they should have.
- Javienn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Umm.... doesn't he pretty much confirm that anyone who violated the Xbox Live Terms of Use (and he specifically states that what ppl did to "sneak" into the COD4 Beta *IS* a violation) was potentially banned (temp 24 hour ban as has been reported/confirmed elsewhere).
Or am I missing something here? - MadTom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I really wanted my friend to get banned... or should I say Half my friends playing CoD4
- JackHererUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Because when you run a beta you often want to limit the amount of data that comes in. I.e. 10,000 beta testers are likely to find as many bugs as 1,000,000 beta testers but you only have to process 1% of the amount of bug reports in order to find and fix the same amount of bugs. Once you have gone through this process you release the new code to 10,000 more fresh testers who haven't already played the limited beta to death. Rinse and repeat until you have release quality code.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Are you 12 years old? Did you buy your PC game? Doesn't that company want your money? Isn't their gaming network controlled by someone who can ban you? Are there not hacks and script cheats on PC online gaming?
- thebaron2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Modded consoles are banned regularly - if your *****'s modded just don't sign on to XBL.
- natefisher, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11In other shocking news Major Nelson was never ever a major in anything.
- dutchb0y, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10like benitojuarez said, you sound foolish complaining about something A) You cheated to play in the first place, and B) you enjoyed but would feel enmity towards the company who makes the game because they might enforce their rules (clearly posted and available, not to mention the XBOX LIVE TOU) about who has access to the beta without a legitimate pass?!
That's ridiculous. - DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Well, crying like a little bitch isn't going to get you into the beta.
- dethsesh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9the beta was open to anyone who signed up. If you didnt care enough to sign up during the 1 day period, then you dont deserve to test the game because you obviously didnt care enough about it. Its a beta not a god damn demo
- Uranium118, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8They should do a massive clean up of Xbox Live, just like blizzard when they banned tens thousands of accounts.
- Artemiszero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8They weren't cheating, they were glitching to GET the beta.
Anyway, if you read the posts from the link, most people are complaining that they are temporarily banning people who broke terms of use to enter to get the beta. Citing the excuse "we didn't get in"... WTF is wrong with young people today. They can rationalize anything. "They were giving away 100 iPods but I was 150th in line. I didn't get the free iPod so I took one. I mean, wth, I didn't get one." - GhettoLevis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7No. He said they *could* ban them, because they violated the ToU, but they didn't.
- Foxsnipe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It's a Beta, not a demo. Be happy the offer was even made. They could have kept it behind closed doors but no, they try to be nice and do controlled tests while giving people a small taste of what they're still working on.
The only time anyone has a right to bitch is if a Demo isn't offered. Even then, is it going to kill you to spend $8 to rent the game or $0 to borrow from a friend when it's released.
The games industry was so much more civil and intelligent in the Genesis and N64 days. - MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5French Americans living in Louisiana?
- edrift101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5They already did that. Remember the ban hammer that came down with the Halo 3 beta?
- azruial, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4rofl! Because your 'PC' doesn't run Microsoft Windows or Apple OSX? Unless you run Linux, and really unless you contribute to the linux project, you are under just as much control on your PC as elsewhere, whether you know it or not.
- knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Hate the players, not the game.
- dukrous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No...he said people were banned, but it was not thousands of people banned. I would expect this to top out at 500 banned accounts....the 25,000 number I saw was wholly unrealistic.
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4funny how that goes, if they don't bad they are pussies if they do they are the evil big brother.
- WormFOODx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I consistently hate the players. Not to be some old codger but seriously, people stealing betas because they can't wait 3 weeks (Halo 3) and people complaining about not getting into a beta that had open signup for 48 hours (CoD4) just shows how stupid people can be. Betas used to be about flushing out bugs and they only needed a small group of responsible testers to do so. Now betas are viewed as demos and not only do people make first and last impressions on betas ("I won't buy it cause its buggy wah wah, its a beta") but developers now have to have betas of 20-30k people because an extremely small percentage ACTUALLY HELP.
Gamers now days take games for granted. We need another game industry meltdown. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This, in other words, is a proper beta test. Thanks to the likes of Google keeping working software in permanent beta status, or game companies having a 'beta' which is essentially just a demo with more bugs, people are unaware that the way the CoD 4 beta is organised is the way a beta test is _supposed_ to be organised.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't know what happened but somehow people outside of the US got into the beta, which was causing extreme lag in some games and made it unplayable. I don't know if they were French Canadian or from France, because they were speaking French.
- Tserk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5This thread accurately represents what it's like on Live.
- Tejiant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You obviously don't know how servers work. As Digg so often proves, over exposure will break many servers. COD4 beta's whole plan is to vamp up beta testers in waves to now only test their game and let players taste the experience, but to prepare their servers. They are doing so in waves given out in tokens/redeem codes. It was free to sign up. I'm in the beta right now and really enjoying it, but already there has been experiences of server problems, servers just dropping, super lag (but that could be due to others' connection issues, and once the whole "downloading content" screen we had to wait out for about an hour to start playing. Remember Halo 3 beta started off poorly because the did not make the adequate preparations, everyone was waiting and waiting to hit for the beta test all at once. They're doing a fantastic job on this beta, and my friends and I can't get enough of it. In fact I'm actually more excited about this for multiplayer than I am for Halo 3. If your just pissed about not being abled to get into beta, just keep your eyes posted to charlieoscardelta.com as they may open up registration agian.
- WormFOODx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5This happened to me as well but the team I was placed on all spoke a middle eastern language. Sadly for a moment I felt like I was assisting some terrorist training so I dropped out.
- remyD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And his name isn't even Nelson
- Rijnzael, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2He posted and confirmed that DVD drive firmware modifications result in a ban quite a while ago.
- geeshock, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7F
- nicksawick1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I was wondering why I wasn't banned yet. I've been waiting all day yesterday for my live to get cut off. Major Nelson is right, they are not banning anyone.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but it's Microsoft, remember. Anything they do is wrong.
- paul1991, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Isnt the article saying that they DID ban 1000s of people, but they are certain that the people deserved it?
Who Cares?
I guess this reduces the number of people that you join you Gay Teabagging Orgys in Halo 3, but maybe they should have read the rules. - radiometric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's Craig T.
Of course, that's Mr. T to you and me. - edrift101, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Ban em' for life! We don't need no TOS cheaters on Xbox Live!
(That was kind of fun. I can see why everyone was so up in arms, when I got banned.) - hockey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why are you surprised? Have you SEEN some of the justifications for software piracy lately?
- RabidFurby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Dickwads should have been banned for a few weeks for being.... "dirty Beta Pirate"dickwads.
Cheers - knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Dugg for not saying "oops, accidental post."
- knightofeffect, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Welcome to Rapture...
- ljkelley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I bet you an major bannings will take place on Sep 25th or Halo 3 Day!
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Why does Major Nelson ride people for sharing accounts here? My understanding was for this exploit you just had to log onto your account on someone else's machine and download it, then they could use it from their own account, as long as it was on the same machine.
No sharing needed, just a visit to a friend's house once. - Rijnzael, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0No, it's an exclusive demo. Sure, they'll accept bug reports, but like any demo, the purpose of this is the generate interest and increase the hype. The fact that it's exclusive makes people want to be one of the few that are accepted to play it. This also generates even more interest as people who can't play it want to try it but can't. Same with the Halo 3 Beta.
- DCB360, on 04/11/2008, -3/+1The option came and I took it. They were giving out unlimited Beta tokens anyways, yet they are kicking out those who really enjoy the game. I didn't steal anything or cheat, I just downloaded it through a separate method. No money is lost and no one is deprived of anything.
If the Beta was private then I would feel bad, but it was available to anyone within that 24 hour time period, so I don't see why I need to be kicked out. - knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Then I guess that would make you a dick, and the Microsoft gaming division just got f***ed.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3If it walks like a Ban Live Account; Talks like a Ban Live Account and you get a notice that you have been Banned from Live then - YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED FROM LIVE.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1but they did ship the wrong power cords to Europe that will cost them to replace -how come no recovery banter on that topic Major Ass lick !!
- DJPRIME90, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1this coming from the Xbox spoke person...
- nicksawick1, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1They didn't ban me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5They should just open up the beta to everyone the F*chops.
Why would you keep something like this so locked down anyway? I thought the more players the more data they could pull down. And 9/10 gamers couldn't be stuffed submitting feedback anyway. -
