- loveddevol, on 11/15/2007, -4/+43no online play for halo?
bawwww, they missed out on something big here D:
hopefully i can still use the live features while playing those games, ex. private chat, online status - jordanlgta, on 11/15/2007, -10/+47"there will be no advantage to buying them on Xbox Live over buying them on disc"
You don't have to leave your home... - ThetaDot, on 11/15/2007, -2/+38That would require modification of the original game code, which means that the developer of the game would have to implement it -- not Microsoft. It'd be a huge nightmare to do, and delay the release of the games if the developer agreed to do it (which I'm sure they'd not do for free so the price of the game would go up on xbox live).
I think it's silly to be upset over something nobody knew they were going to offer in the first place. - dbldn, on 11/15/2007, -5/+35Thanks Major for the clarification. No thanks for the service. Most of us will be better served buying the discs used at GameStop or Half. Perhaps this might be a worthwhile service further down the road.
- frostyfrog, on 11/15/2007, -5/+25The achievement whore in me is sad, but I missed out on Psychonauts when it first came out so I will probably download it and give it a try. Yes, one could probably find it cheaper used, but I refuse to fund that sector of the market. I'd rather support a download service that will hopefully push companies to eventually release full-scale games via digital distribution at the same time as their retail counterparts ( ala Steam ).
- gohepcat, on 11/15/2007, -1/+19I'm really shocked at how little people know about game development. Do you really think you can just add "achievements" or online play to a codebase that's 5 years old? Seriously?
So...I will not be buying any of these, but it's pretty cool to be able to order a full Xbox game online, download it, then play it. I'm sure sometime in the next 5 years, I'll see something that catches my eye during a dry spell and end up impulse buying it. - ChristianBk, on 11/15/2007, -10/+26Whoever thought the big M$ would put forth the effort to incorporate achievements into the Xbox Originals are numbskulls. Of COURSE achievements weren't going to happen!
- FDL1, on 11/15/2007, -1/+14The great thing about the 360 isn't beating the games, it's showing everyone online that I did.
- SpaceNinjaDino, on 11/15/2007, -2/+13Those of us with 20GB (13GB usable) drives should not touch this. Every GB is precious.
Although I suggest people pick up the physical disc even if you have ample space. - CaffeinePowered, on 11/15/2007, -2/+13What does it matter if there are no achievements? Does it somehow make the gameplay or other content any better or worse? Sure, they're nice to have, but should it really hamper the service because its not there...
- jschuur, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9The achievement system isn't just about points. It can be away to show the world that you've beaten a certain part of the game in a way the developer wanted to highlight. Did you finish a map in a given way? Find all the secret areas? Pull off a particularly difficult stunt?
True achievement whores probably care more about score aggregates and having a high point number, but there's more than one way to look at the achievement system. - Ender008, on 11/15/2007, -0/+9Good luck finding Psychonauts in stores...
- Linkage155, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Exactly, it would require going into the games and editing the code, not sure if it would be worth it for microsoft.
- ExSlashdotter, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7Wow. I think you just tried to make a joke involving star trek, bill gates, and video games that wasn't even funny on digg.
I'm really not sure how to help you. - cd419, on 11/15/2007, -1/+8I'm fairly certain those original xbox game DVDs have "DRM" Go ahead and burn a copy of halo and see if it plays ;-)
- Scheissen, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7I dugg you up cause it's the truth. Every real Halo pro that has moved onto the sequels only did that because it was popular and that's where the money came from when the little kids heard of Halo2. Halo: CE being released with Live will outsell the sequels.
- MrFisty, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7Achievements were going to be the only thing to get me to buy via XBL. Looks like I'll be trawling the bargain bins.
And what's this "preserve the integrity" crap? Didn't stop them putting achievements in old arcade classics. - IEatHamburgers, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6That only benefits those who use Digg - the ones afraid to go out into the sunshine...
- chazuk, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6Do you actually own a 360?
There's no way of getting the full 20GB back...... - 0two, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6If they DID have achievements then you guys would be complaining about how they were trying to force people to buy the games to get points, and how it's all part of the evil M$ scheme to turn gamers into achievement whores to sell more games. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. No matter what Microsoft does it's automatically a bad thing around here.
And I am absolutely not a Microsoft fan. I do have a 360 (because it's got the best games bar none, I'll take the hardware issues grudgingly), but I really dislike windows, I'm a Mac guy all the way. I just get sick of the huge amount of Microsoft hate on Digg. - Fragarach87, on 11/15/2007, -1/+7Dugg for accuracy. But what do you people expect they're not going to go back and add achievements to games that are 4+ years old. I mean come on, some of the developers don't even exist anymore or are now working on entirely different franchises.
- Jeffler, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5Used copies don't have achievements either...
- eviljim, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5"Fund that sector of the market"? What's wrong with selling your used games?
If you mean used games at places like GameStop -- which have basically turned into pawn shops -- that I can understand. But picking up a used copy off someone who no longer plays it from half.com, ebay, amazon, etc seems like a reasonable option.
Digital distribution is nice, but the DRM involved sucks (eg: you can't ever sell your copy used, might not have guaranteed access to play it in the future...) - watership, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5You know, you don't have to get these games if you don't want too. Steam offers games to download that are older and don't have achievements and you don't see people bitching there. Besides, Psychonauts is 5 dollars cheaper on Xbox Originals, and I'd like to see you find that in a store.
- justinp, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5...Duh?
- herbkyle, on 11/15/2007, -9/+14That sucks!!
- louiedog, on 11/15/2007, -1/+6Except these don't come scratched and they reduce wear and tear on the optical drive. My Xbox's drive went bad after 3 years. I'm not planning on buying anything listed yet, but I could see myself buying games online at some point.
- boyasunder, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5However you do it, you do want to play Psychonauts. Brilliant game.
- BedPost, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5I think this is meant to revive games that you can't buy anymore (many of them cult classics). Just try finding Psychonauts or Ninja Gaiden. I can see this being as a rather useful service.
- JoeRamboUK, on 11/15/2007, -4/+8Major Nelson says '''These are the original games that were created before Xbox 360'',
Well so was Sonic 1 and 2 and all the other classic titles, but they still have achievements in them. - watership, on 11/15/2007, -5/+9You're not seriously comparing games that took maybe a team of 6 a few months to code to a game that takes 80-200 people 2 years to make ...are you?
- InferiorWang, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5Wait, who is downloading 6 gig files over xbox live?
- Christbait, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3It's just like point scoring I guess. You can actually use them also for prizes on occasions. And hell, even in some cases it can breathe a few more breaths of air into an otherwise disappointingly dull game before you decide to trade it in.
But other than that, they're mainly penile compensatory digits, - Christbait, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3I've used plenty of XBOX Originals and they've been absolutely trouble free, some games however still aren't compatible, mainly Operation Flashpoint which is a bit of a shame because OFP but with better graphics + XBL could mean lots of win, even though I prefer playing with KB + Mouse yet I like the upgraded graphics on the Xbox.
- djphatjive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4Duh!!!!!
- Fragarach87, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3My point exactly lol. I however may buy Burnout but the others I have or have no desire to play :P
- xino, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Why wouldn't they run properly?
- bil4l, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3XBC is fun, and it was okay when XBL wasn't available for Halo, but the host ALWAYS has way too much advantage, and only really really serious halo players still play XBC. All I'm saying is that even though Halo 1 came out 6 years ago it's still light years better than it's two sequels, and Bungie knows it is. They aren't dumb enough to release a $15 version of the game with XBL play, they'd simply be shooting themselves in the foot. Dig me down all you want, but it's the simple truth.
- merdiesel, on 11/15/2007, -3/+6...sucks for Microsoft.
I'm won't be buying em' now. - sampson123, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Or Indigo Prophecy...
- bejayel, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3or you could put in a 120 gig drive
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/inst ... - louiedog, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4I don't have a Gold account so I never play online. My friends list consists of my girlfriend and another real world friend. I like achievements because they motivate me to try harder in games. I don't care about collecting achievements or online achievements, but achievements that reward something that isn't part of the game's story give me a sense of accomplishment. If there's an achievement for beating a level using the weakest weapon, I'm going to try it. It's something I wouldn't normally do unless I'm challenged to.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/15/2007, -3/+6Would you really pay double what it's worth if they did? If so, wow they've really got their hooks in you.
- bil4l, on 11/15/2007, -5/+8They add online play to halo for $15 they might as well just stop producing Halo 3....it would actually work against them.
- Diggaholics, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3The game will be exactly like the original.
- estvir, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3You're not very smart.
- PedleZelnip, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Actually these are original *XBOX* games, not just games that were dev'd for other platforms and ported over to the 360. Not the same thing.
- ch4os1337, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3Try out XBconnect. its fun for a little while but the people who play on it are often serious pro's who play all the time..
- ithejosh, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3For some reason that gave me major lulz.
- McGrude, on 11/15/2007, -1/+3This is totally reasonable. Look you are buying a disk image (a DRM signed disk image mind you). It is no different than having the physical DVD except you'll play it from the hard disk rather than a DVD.
Will I use the service? Probably not, but you can't expect this service to be any different than the game experience offered by having an original physical DVD.
Likewise games such as Halo:CE will not have XBox Live multiplayer. That would require changing the game code.
Although they could have built a LAN bridging over XBox LIVE thingamajig and accomplished multiplayer for Halo:CE. -
