Xbox Live takes serious action against gamerscore cheaters
majornelson.com — Microsoft has taken action against numerous cheaters on Xbox Live who have been manipulating their gamerscore. The actions include resetting the gamerscore of these people to zero, removing their ability to regain all previously gained achievements, and labeling them as a cheater on Xbox.com and in the Xbox dashboard.

- netgem21, on 03/25/2008, -160/+5CheaterMcCheat from Cheatville who's a dirty cheater? What's wrong with just the official 'find out more' subtitle? Wow, Microsoft has released a new low of immaturity.
- Jam20621, on 03/25/2008, -1/+58I'm pretty sure that that subtitle is all that will really be on their profile. "Cheater McCheat" is just a nickname genius
- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2008, -0/+30Although if they put Chester Cheetah for your account picture, that would rock.
- Nathrat, on 03/25/2008, -2/+52...said the cheater

You said the same thing on Major's blog. It's just a damn example.. they don't actually change your name.

- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2008, -0/+116Seems worse than just banning him... now he has to live with it or leave it.

- Duositex, on 03/25/2008, -3/+48Did anyone expect a Strip Club D.J. to be faithful?
- Jakyll, on 03/25/2008, -1/+19So you mean if I choose "12InchLoveTool" as a user name, it suddenly becomes true? Sweet.
/s- bulletproofbra, on 03/25/2008, -1/+16Yeah, in fact I confidently expect StripClubDj to be a 13-year-old arse-faced weasel. :)

- UnnDunn, on 03/25/2008, -12/+149What's worse is he can't earn any of those achievements back, even the legit way. Since he had nearly every achievement for every game in every language, that means he's hosed until new games come out.
- bubbakja, on 03/25/2008, -5/+156"What's better is he can't earn any of those achievements back, even the legit way. Since he had nearly every achievement for every game in every language, that means he's hosed until new games come out."
- Fixed- Conwaysb0718, on 03/25/2008, -2/+62Sadly, it took me a couple readings to find your fix. I knew this systems training was taking its toll on the ol' bean.

- HauntedTank, on 03/25/2008, -35/+6I bet some of the cheaters are contemplating suicide right now!
- IKORKYI, on 03/25/2008, -26/+4no they love it cause the purpose of cheating is to get underneath peoples skin and make a scene...they enjoy the attention
that and the lack of frustration that comes to stupid/uncoordinated people when cheating- Conwaysb0718, on 03/25/2008, -1/+19i thought the purpose of cheating was to win at all costs.
- fkr3, on 03/25/2008, -3/+8Or at no cost.
- Zera, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2If you cheat to win at anything, then you haven't actually WON at all. A "winner" who has cheated is a fraud, nothing more.
The fundamental reason for cheating is because it boosts the ego of the person who can't win without cheating. These people are so short sighted that they interpret that false win as something of significance, and as a result, they continue to do it.
- Ajajadude, on 03/25/2008, -1/+9Yeah, they showed us by losing everything they spent all that time getting!
- FlyingSpaghetti, on 03/25/2008, -0/+10GIVE THEM NOTHING BUT TAKE FROM THEM EVERYTHING!

- MrFisty, on 03/25/2008, -44/+14You know, you don't necessarily have to cheat to inflate your score. Just play the early games, and the kids games. Some of those titles practically give the points away. But seriously, the achievement point system has been meaningless for a long time. If it did something like unlock special items or features, then great, but it's largely a tarnished gimmick that sorely needs some innovation added to it.
- Intangible360, on 03/25/2008, -3/+57Clearly you are incorrect considering the lengths people apparently go to to get gamerscore. What Microsoft has done is to add meaning back into the points and to untarnish it, the idea of giving away money(MSP) or prizes is ridiculous anyway. Gamerscore and achievements are one area that journalists seem to universally agree was an incredibly ingenious move by Microsoft.
- piper999, on 03/25/2008, -2/+26I got Contra for free courtesy of Old Spice for upping my gamerscore by 1500 points. They should do more of that thing as far as I'm concerned.
- Intangible360, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1I'm shocked...you think that they should give you games or items for free? :O Everyone would like to get free stuff from the time they spend on their favorite past time but is it reasonable to expect it to happen or hold i against Microsoft if it doesn't?
- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2008, -1/+14Think about it.
Its not free, you had to buy/rent the games to get your score there.
Think of it as a "Buy 100, get 1 free" kind of deal.
- theaceoffire, on 03/25/2008, -1/+14Think about it.
- Intangible360, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1I'm shocked...you think that they should give you games or items for free? :O Everyone would like to get free stuff from the time they spend on their favorite past time but is it reasonable to expect it to happen or hold i against Microsoft if it doesn't?

- logicalnoise, on 03/25/2008, -1/+25they are not exactly meaningless. The good ones give you extra challenges to complete with proof that you completed them and some others do in fact unlock content(though not directly).
- IKORKYI, on 03/25/2008, -11/+5I hate how you can have sub-scoring such as in COD4 with the rankings. This is an extreme example because it gives NO gamerscore points for online play and you can't see the online ranking system without owning the game (halo 2/3, etc.)
I like to kick my friends asses, and i want the world to know, i want to shout it from the top of the mountain that i have wasted more friday nights than anyone else playing this game that i know - Nathrat, on 03/25/2008, -5/+4Fight Night Round 3, free 1000 points

This is the easiest by far.- munkyxtc, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3YouTube is proxied here, but if that is the Avatar video then you are 100% correct.
- truspector, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3@mnun
You are correct. - clclark33, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Geez, there are some games where I wonder what the point is of even having achievements if they are that easy.
- JudgeMonkey, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Yeah, major Nelson has admitted he did that one. While watching the video he tried some of it, and before he knew it he had all the points. Surely they can't consider that cheating or else they would have to do this to MN too. I would think that falls under the "avoid game play" criteria.
I guess you could avoid that by breaking the achievements up into a couple of days.

- MRintheKeys, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4King Kong the official movie game is another super easy one, you actually get like 100 points for lighting the grass on fire.
- phronko, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3True. And it's actually a pretty awesome game for the few hours it lasts. Worth a rental.
- MRintheKeys, on 03/25/2008, -1/+2Yeah, absolutely. For a launch game, it was actually pretty tight.

- truspector, on 03/25/2008, -5/+164Finally, while I don't really "care" about my gamerscore, I was sick of these cheaters manipulating their way to the top. On a side note, didn't stripclubdj recently try to sell his gamercard on ebay?
- exomni, on 03/25/2008, -64/+3"Finally" and "I don't really 'care'" don't mix.

""- Viti, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1The final "" was the killer. LoL! Classic.
- emjaymj, on 03/25/2008, -3/+5Protip - Commas are often used in place of parentheses in order to introduce a seperate idea that interrupts the flow of the main clause.
Main clause: Finally, I was sick of these cheaters manipulating their way to the top.
Parenthetical: while I don't really "care" about my gamerscore

- slicecom, on 03/25/2008, -4/+329If you care about your gamerscore enough to find ways to artificially inflate it, you fail at life.
- TheVigilante, on 03/25/2008, -5/+34This is a statement I can get behind!
I have a gamerscore of 3140 and have had my Xbox 360 since October 2007...- chris9902, on 03/25/2008, -5/+118315 and I've had mine since 2005. I did whore all 1000 points in Hitman but apart from that I don't care.
- estvir, on 03/26/2008, -0/+7I'm barely over 8000 and I think I've had mine for over 2 years. :/ I've finished a ton of games too but I don't tend to bother with extras (Like the skulls in Halo3).
- woody56292, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4Had my console since launch and still only have 9248. I am an online player, so I don't get many opportunities to earn gamerscore.
- hbeierg, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4i have had mine from launch and only have 4275 points
- inbred, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2I've had mine since October of 2007 as well, and I probably only have two or three-hundred.
- TiMMY8765, on 03/25/2008, -18/+8with xbox 360, the fun isn't beating the games, it's showing everyone online that I did
- diggdiggerid, on 03/25/2008, -16/+5Corollary: if you care enough about whether or not someone really spent 50 hours collecting every trinket in a videogame, you fail at life.
- AresDiggs, on 03/25/2008, -25/+3Yea i bet you're all for hacking, and using bit torrent to DL digital media.. but as soon as someone cheats to inflate a number that has no real life value or meaning... then you think they fail at life? get outside and get some sun you dumb bastard....
- saisumimen, on 03/25/2008, -3/+8Your analogy fails. Big time.
"hacking" has its uses, whether good or bad. "using bit torrent to DL digital media" (?) I'm assuming you mean for copyright infringement, right?
WTF do any of these things have to do with people showing off to strangers on the Internet in order to boost their ego? Absolute, sweet *****-all, that's what. Please go outside and get some sun instead of trying to discuss things which you don't really understand.- AresDiggs, on 03/25/2008, -7/+1I was pointing out that for them the rules don't apply in some areas and then they do in other areas... for example using BT to DL, most of us do it and dont give a ***** about the rules/laws.. but then as soon as someone cheats in a game... its "OMG that bastard is cheating.. I hope MS does something about this" ...
- Ataxia2008, on 03/25/2008, -1/+8Shut.Up.
- emjaymj, on 03/25/2008, -1/+8You're missing the point. It has nothing to do with breaking the rules. Pirating digital media provides a very real benefit in that it saves you money and is often more convenient than going to the store. Having an insanely high gamerscore just shows people that you play videogames way too much. To care about this enough to go out of your way and cheat, with the possibility of even more embarrassment, is just sad.
- AresDiggs, on 03/26/2008, -6/+2@ emjaymj -- you just said stealing saves you money? well no ***** but its illegal... and cheating is technically illegal in games (against TOS) and yet pirating music is ok and cheating is not ok? uhhh... where do you draw the line? or is your line just a ***** zig zag all over the place to fit your needs and agenda...
- emjaymj, on 03/26/2008, -1/+2Again, the point flies way over your head. I'm not condoning theft, but the fact that there is a real benefit to it is impossible to deny. The original poster made a comment about the uselessness of going to such lengths for a gamerscore, and you tried to argue with it from a moral/legal standpoint. The thing is, the original poster gave no indication of his opinion on rule-breaking, so your argument makes no sense because it has nothing to do with his comment.
- AresDiggs, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Could that be why my post starts of "Yea i bet " ... hmmm... probably.... and i bet 90% of people on digg are against cheating and for DL music and movies... not that im for or against either... in fact i cheat and DL.. so eh... kiss my ass.
- emjaymj, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1So you tried to argue with someone a point that you KNOW had nothing to do with the original comment? I figured you had maybe just failed at reading at reading between the lines, but now I see you're even dumber than I thought.
- AresDiggs, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1You can think what you want my point still stands and is still valid... and you argue with someone who made no comment to you... so to each his own
maybe you just fail "at reading at reading" too...
- AresDiggs, on 03/25/2008, -7/+1I was pointing out that for them the rules don't apply in some areas and then they do in other areas... for example using BT to DL, most of us do it and dont give a ***** about the rules/laws.. but then as soon as someone cheats in a game... its "OMG that bastard is cheating.. I hope MS does something about this" ...
- bagboyrebel, on 03/26/2008, -3/+6you really don't know what hacking is, do you?
- AresDiggs, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1You really don't know what a woman is, do you?
- bagboyrebel, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1wow, you make a very good point. I actually know what a word means, so obviously I have the problem.
- AresDiggs, on 03/26/2008, -3/+1You really don't know what a woman is, do you?

- nickj6282, on 03/25/2008, -17/+7I'm a definite GS Whore but I won't cheat to get them. Just rent/buy really really easy games for inflating the score and play the really really good games (COD4/Halo3) to get all 1000.
- Issius, on 03/25/2008, -3/+16Why would you play a game that isn't fun?
- allahuakbar, on 03/25/2008, -4/+24Because he's a loser.
- Issius, on 03/25/2008, -3/+16Why would you play a game that isn't fun?
- cryptoki, on 03/25/2008, -9/+8Tell that to all the counterstrike cheaters, who use aimbots(headshot, one hit kill nearly every time), wall hacks (see through walls), no gun recoil (bullets always aim straight and true), boots of speed (makes you move faster than normal), and the abilty to return fire when their taking gunfire like its no big deal. The main thing about aimbots i hate, is the one shot kill over and over again... when your the size of a pea, halfway accross the map. Steampowered.com, just cant keep up. Its always the guy who's score is 30 and 8 or whatever lulz, just randoms the room and everyone falls down.
- oliash, on 03/25/2008, -1/+11Oh noes, boots of speed!
- juicebag, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6Boots of blinding speed? I remember those from Morrowind. They made you go fast... and blind. Get it?
- estvir, on 03/26/2008, -0/+330-8 is nothing impressive for a score in a pub CS server and I can't remember the last time I came across a cheater in 1.6.. wait, there was a wallhacker in a PUG a couple of days ago and he was banned in a few minutes.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3there really aren't that many cheaters in CS.
- kinggfx, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I was going to make fun of you for explaining what a wallhack was, but I couldn't type in the captcha correctly and then after clicking the speaker button next to it Firefox crashed. how pathetic..
- LALDET, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1The funny thing is, is that same damn thing happened to me. ***** button.
- inbred, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Of course players will return gunfire while taking gunfire like it's no big deal because it isn't a big deal. It's not like we're really gonna die if we get shot. It just sounds like you're typing from the perspective of a sucky player, to me. I've played CS quite a lot lately and have yet to come across a hacker.
- brufleth, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1I didn't even know what gamerscores were until this comment thread and wouldn't know where to look for rankings even if I cared.

- kinseyincanada, on 03/25/2008, -25/+10i really hope they dont ***** up and delete the points off someone who hasnt cheated, i can just see a ton of people coming out and complaining that they got screwed over.
- TheVigilante, on 03/25/2008, -11/+5I had this thought as well. I wonder what exactly is their algorithm for finding cheaters.
- smiley2billion, on 03/25/2008, -2/+3I would guess there's some sort of total playtime clock and if you have played a game for, say, 5 minutes and have all 1000 points they pull it. I'm just guessing here, because I really don't know if it's more advanced than that or not.
- nickj6282, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6I played Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth for about 3 minutes (total, no lie) and got all 1000 points. No cheating either. I'm too lazy to look up the Youtube link but the game doesn't even try to make it difficult.

How many kills in each game, how many times you opened a freaking door, how long you play on average each session for each game, everything. They go ***** on the statistical data harvesting. I'm sure there are plenty of ways to see if something was horribly abused or not.
- kinseyincanada, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6well i just remember after they go around banning people from xbox live a bunch of people who havent modded their consoles get banned. I just could see this happening again.

- lawday, on 03/25/2008, -58/+1This is the way to go my god what i have seen in sites like mygammertag.net gammers with well over 1 million in Gammer Score GS this i knew was inposible since even on a game that is very easy to beat like KingKong that took me about 5 hours to earn the 1000 GS so lets say a million GS means 1 million / 1000 is 1000 xbox 360 video games so how long would that take for me i had my xbox 360 about 2 years now and have only played about 120 retail games both baught and rented plus about 100 arcade games that i have yet to clear thoose i play between getting retail games this is why i am glad you are finnally cracking a few heads and make it better for real gammers like me way to go. MetroDarkAngle for the loss. "gammers" also for the loss. - fkr3, on 03/25/2008, -7/+3Do you know what English as a second language is?

- fkr3, on 03/26/2008, -1/+3The guy's English was readable..... it was far from perfect and he's got obvious grammatical issues but anyone who couldn't figure out the gist of what he's saying has their own linguistic problems. There's far, far worse English out there. How's your Mandarin?
- ClockworksNine, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5I speak three languages, English not being the native one. I'll go ahead and assure you that he sucks ass at this whole "communication" thing.
- fkr3, on 03/26/2008, -1/+1Do you speak them all fluently? I live in a Spanish speaking country and my Spanish is far from great.... the locals cut me a lot of slack when I make mistakes and when they make mistakes with English I cut them slack too.
Most of the world doesn't speak English fluently let alone natively, if you can understand them then why make fun of them? It's the equivelent of making fun of a first year uni student because they don't have our degree and a decade's experience under their belt, but they're working towards it.
My French is even worse than my Spanish, but does anyone give me a hard time? No... I ask them to speak slower and enunciate correctly and they make that concession without convincing themselves they're somehow superior just because they grew up speaking French.

- jarckitekt, on 03/25/2008, -3/+10volacide-you phail for not understanding how dirty carpet and poorly ventilated spaces affect the "design flaw" . I have had my xbox since the day it released, no problems ever I keep it off the floor and in a well ventilated entertainment center.
- volacide, on 03/26/2008, -3/+3No dude, I know all about ventilation, I knew someone dumbass was going to come in and say this. But it's well known that the reason that 360's DIE is because of ***** hardware design, namely the fact that the GPU heatsink isn't large enough to dissipate the necessary amount of heat, instead it's smaller because of the positioning of the DVD drive.
Try again. Sure, you could argue that poor ventilation will further it, but at the end of the day, the reason that your 360 is getting ***** is because of the ***** design. Period.

- Tribis, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6The system of cheating was quite simple; these people would simply trade gamesaves. Microsoft later blocked cheaters from being able to transfers saves to and from their consoles. They retaliated by creating a program that would resign the owner data on a gamesave.

- exomni, on 03/25/2008, -2/+13To be honest, it was harder for me getting the minimum time on the practice-run thing at the beginning. I guess I got quite lucky a few times on MHC.
But anyways, hopefully my ease in getting the achievement frustrates you even more. - theotherdude, on 03/25/2008, -0/+7That one was probably the hardest achievement I've ever gotten. Just keep trying and don't forget that there are more flashbangs once you go up the stairs, so use them pretty much every chance you get. Also, on veteran, you HAVE to get a headshot on the guy at the end. Just so you know. Other difficulties you could shoot him in the leg or something (apparently) but a headshot is the only way to win veteran.
Luckily I went for the headshot anyway, and then later found out that if I hadn't gotten that I would have had to start over... I would've been *****. - NickyBatts, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3Pick up the first dudes, the one on the left, shotgun after you smoke him. It's easy as pie after that.

Of course, with the new airbuses and the 1st class, partitioned, private, twin-sized bed compartments, joining the mile high club will soon be much less of an accomplishment.- Jb611, on 03/26/2008, -1/+7k man we get it. you had sex in a plane. please stop telling the whole internet. it was probably your hand anyways.
- GenoBaby, on 03/25/2008, -0/+9This achievement literally took me 2 weeks of playing 4 hours a day on that same exact level. Sprint... kill the terrorist in the bathroom... run thru the conference room... flash bang through the door... kill those guys... run to the next area... duck in front of the seats... flash bang... kill all the terrorist... run towards the steps... wait... three terrorist will run down... kill them... rush up the stairs... take the left staircase... flash bang... kill all the terrorist... sprint to the table for more flash bangs... flash bang down that passage way... sprint past everyone... go through the little corner and gun down the terrorist there... you're now at the VIP. This should take you 5000 times of practice to finish.

- HangoverBoy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0My only recommendation for MHC is to watch Youtube vids on it. It's the only way I was able to do it, but it's completely worth it to keep trying. Gamerscore Correction
Posted: Mar 25 2008, 02:01 AM by Major Nelson
I wanted to follow up and let you know where we are on the post I made a few months ago on Gamesave Tampering. ( http://majornelson.com/archive/2007/10/30/Xbox-LIV ... ) Today we took action on some of the accounts we have identified as the most serious offenders who have violated the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use ( http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/legal/legal-tou.htm ) by tampering with their Gamerscore and Achievements.
The steps today takes the form of the following:
• Resetting the entire Gamerscore for an account to zero
• The account will be unable to regain all previously obtained achievements and Gamerscore, however, the players will have the ability to gain future Achievements by earning them fairly, like the majority of the Xbox LIVE community does.
• The account will be clearly labeled as a cheater for the community to view on xbox.com. You can see an example here ( http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?pp ... ). In dash, the personal view of the gamercard will be labeled as well.

Edit: Added link directly to our internal test account Gamercard ( http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?pp ... ) that shows the cheater section. - killq, on 03/25/2008, -43/+1Good job being gay and submitting a link that doesn't work subby. You are officially a digger *****.
- GSnake, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6How is it his fault that Major Nelson's hosting can't handle a few hundred clicks?
Grow up troll.- OaklandNative, on 03/26/2008, -0/+2Dugg up for Hiero
- logan074, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I forgot that it is the first link that has ever not worked. Calm down before you break your keyboard.
- GSnake, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6How is it his fault that Major Nelson's hosting can't handle a few hundred clicks?
- LogicBomB, on 03/25/2008, -2/+12Good is all I can say.
If you are lame enough to cheat to get a higher score than what's the point in having it? It's like bragging about buying the best tv on the market right after stealing it. I'm all for going for gold with GP but if you didn't get them yourself or you had to cheat to get them, what the hell is the point?- banmaster, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4Absolutely.
I had a friend who used to buy his spoilt son an N64 game each week, but ONLY if the little brat already had the cheat codes. If the little prick couldn't cheat he wouldn't even pick up the game. - slightlygifted, on 03/25/2008, -0/+5every time i see an 8 year old at a game stop he always buys the $25 guide book along with the game. wtf?
- exomni, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3I'd hardly compare having the best TV on the market to having some worthless numbers on a meaningless "gamercard".
- Viti, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3I think you missed, not a little, but the ENTIRE point of his comment. It made perfect sense. Re-read how he meant it. :)
- LogicBomB, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Thanks Viti :)
- banmaster, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4Absolutely.
- radixus, on 03/25/2008, -12/+1I don't understand why Microsoft is even bothering with this . . . seems like a lot of work for people that just want a high gamerscore to be popular. I say let them. If they want to steal game saves in order to boost their score, let them. Gamerpoints mean nothing, you can't use them to buy items or anything (unless Microsoft is preparing for some new feature.) They don't do anything at all, so who really cares if people cheat to increase them?
- sparql, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3They do it because gamer score is kind of a meta game. Some people love getting achievements. If your effort becomes trivialized, people stop trying. Though I don't care much about mine, I can understand why people care about it. If I were still a young kid, I'm certain I would have competed with my friends for the highest score.
- kanabiis, on 03/25/2008, -5/+16I dont get it, what exactly is the purpose of high gamer score? Bragging rights, on XBOX Live, who cares? Who really ever paid any attention to anyone elses gamer score? I play some games on XBOX live, I can't recall a time ever where someones gamerscore was any major topic of discussion, ever.
- NotAgOat, on 03/25/2008, -1/+6There are many people that play on Live that think its cool to waste so much time. If I happen to get an achievement (steam games), then whoopdeedoo, I wont go out of my way to achieve one.
- Nextrix, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4Ya I agree exactly. I think it would have been better if Microsoft make the gamer score the actual points system therefor allowing players that play many games on their xbox to purchase items in the market. That or at least provide a special type of market items you can unlock that actually have some purpose for gaining a gamer score.
- Sairgem, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4Your gamerscore is for bragging rights, that's it. Don't complain that they don't buy you anything. Some developers use achievements to unlock certain things within their game though. ie: Bungie lets you unlock new armor for certain achievements.
- ekfritz, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2Microsoft has plenty of reason to track gamer scores and make sure the numbers are not BS. As time passes the value of that demographic information just becomes more valuable. They know if you're a hardcore or casual gamer, how often you play, what type of games you like, how old you are, where you live etc. etc. A live database with that demographic information is an asset that keeps paying off.
- n3wb4y, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0gamerscore invokes a sense of community amongst gamers
and it can be very satisfying to complete one that is particularly challenging, even if the only person who will ever know about it is me! - eazyyweeezy, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0you must not have any friends in real life, Gamerscore creates a friendly competition which can make playing games more fun, and gives a greater purpose, it also adds more replay value to your games.
- GSnake, on 03/25/2008, -0/+20Cheaters should be dealt with accordingly, I'm glad Microsoft took this action, it will act as a deterrent in the future hopefully.
It's pretty pathetic that people have to cheat and exploit video game systems in order to earn fictional video game points, at least we know who's definitely not getting laid in this world.- solid12345, on 03/25/2008, -0/+2I agree, they should be taken out, shot, and hanged in the public square.
- Crossmenjeff, on 03/25/2008, -7/+3how is this serious action, all they have to do is create a new account. whoop dee doo, thats not punishment. and since gamerscores amount to diddly, i don't see how this addresses any issue at all.
- nobelief, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3because you're a moron? you have no idea how many games and how many hours they lost. it's worse than getting deleted
- oldhat, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Don't forget they have to pay $50 for another membership, too. And all their friends lists, too?
- al11588, on 03/25/2008, -21/+2I am a cheater and what i will do it again.
- breaks, on 03/25/2008, -0/+4the best of luck to you.
- damnyooneek, on 03/25/2008, -1/+3there isnt enough incentive to care about gamer scores
- Skull0Inc, on 03/25/2008, -2/+12AHAHAAHAHAHAAHAH!!!.........wait.....
AHAHAAHAAHAHAH! - TheSwirl, on 03/25/2008, -7/+7How about instead of "cracking down" on people who cheat to get achievements to add to their gamerscores (that don't mean anything anyway,) they work on fixing the unacceptable DRM issues on DLC for people who get the RRoD? Seems like the more important fix.
- spidoman, on 03/25/2008, -4/+12video game scores and "serious action" is an oxymoron.
- oinker262, on 03/26/2008, -0/+3not if it involves money
- YellowSnowDemon, on 03/26/2008, -0/+1Gee mister, you're kind of a douche.
- weezer17, on 03/25/2008, -1/+14I cant read the article due to being at work and the goddamn firewall. Does this say anything about the ***** standings on COD4? Im sure someone has 1,000,000,000 kills and 2 deaths.
- epyon8282, on 03/25/2008, -0/+6Nope sorry. Nada on any word on that though I second that gripe too.....
- slightlygifted, on 03/25/2008, -0/+12and people with negative shots missed.
- weezer17, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I forgot about that *****.
- Fizzle, on 03/26/2008, -1/+4Negative shots missed in CoD4 is from hitting 2 people with 1 shot. You will have an increase of 2 in the hit and -1 in the missed category for that case. Now that doesn't excuse the people who go into games, get their friends to line up, do it like 200 times and then never play again, just letting you know how it happens.
- BlackKnight6, on 03/26/2008, -0/+4If that's what causes a negative miss then that is a glitch. Technically, there is no such thing as a negative miss, if you don't miss, its a hit. 2 hits, 1 shot = 200% accuracy which would make mathematical sense, but a negative miss doesn't.
- weezer17, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I forgot about that *****.
- wafflesomd, on 03/25/2008, -3/+6I guess this matters if you actually care that much about video games.
- 1b2a, on 03/25/2008, -8/+3Fail with honor. Cheat with dignity.
- noseeme, on 03/25/2008, -1/+14What can you get for having a high gamer score? Does it even mean anything?
- Hoogs, on 03/25/2008, -0/+10Nothing, and no.
- kablammo, on 03/25/2008, -1/+4Banana stickers.
- Zera, on 03/26/2008, -1/+5It gives teenagers and under-developed adults a false sense of accomplishment, and a false desire to go out and buy and then master games they wouldn't have otherwise even tried.
It's a fantastically successful spin off of the World of Warcraft points system that has kept some people playing (and paying for) WOW for literally years and not realize they're playing a boring game.
However, for some gamers, "accomplishments" in WOW or scores like the gamerscore is very likely the only chance they'll ever get in life to be in the top 10% at something, or even top 1%. Since these chores of accumulating score often take pure time more than brains, ability or wit, it's something they can endlessly work at and ultimately achieve, irregardless of ability. Sure, an intelligent and skillful gamer can get their quicker, but since time is no factor in the score, the most dimwitted among us can ultimately achieve as well. So this is one venue that they can dominate, with alot of persistence.
Its something that has no value whatsoever unless the individual places value on it. To those who do, I would ask, are you really playing games because they are fun and enjoyable? If so, digg me up. Or are you playing them purely for this arbitrary score you have assigned some personal value? If so, bury me. - royalwcheese, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1Hmm... High Score, what does that mean? Did I break it?
- FearFactory, on 03/25/2008, -11/+2They will just go out and buy another XBOX 360.
- livingfor2night, on 03/25/2008, -0/+3About dang time measures were taken
- spacebuddy, on 03/25/2008, -3/+10You have to be a real loser in life to cheat on a video game.
- InYourWorld, on 03/25/2008, -5/+1What if they get the wrong person...?
- skinsgamer, on 03/25/2008, -2/+3It says only if they meet the criteria 100%, so if somebody cheated in one game I really doubt they are going to reset the gamerscore.
- exomni, on 03/25/2008, -2/+2Nothing. They won't give a ***** if they make a mistake. You'll just have to start from the beginning.
- whitlock11111, on 03/25/2008, -1/+30I was vaguely aware of StripClubDJ as the worldwide leader in gamerscore and I also was aware that he cheated. If they are able to reset the majority of cheaters it might be interesting to see what nerd has amassed the most achievement points legitimately.
- dominikkom, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Just checked, the first place is still a cheater.
casinoguy's Xbox - Mar 17 2008
Strange enough, I don't remember playing any games with casinoguy yesterday... but our gamerscore which now stands at 267689 did go up. That means somehow we gained 2510 points. Oh well... maybe I overheated and lost my short term memory. So it goes...

- dominikkom, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Just checked, the first place is still a cheater.
- StephenChow, on 03/25/2008, -1/+13"and labeling them as a cheater on Xbox.com and in the Xbox dashboard." Quite an honor, I think
- Zera, on 03/26/2008, -1/+6I caught your sarcasm, but remember, to the people who endlessly SPEND TIME CHEATING, instead of just enjoying the game, they will be crushed being labeled as a cheater. Clearly, their ranking meant A LOT to them.
