engadget.com — In the manner of a modern day fable on par with The Little Engine That Could or Rocky, Microsoft has just announced that sales of the Xbox 360 have outraced total sales of the original Xbox, a mere two days after the 360's third birthday on November 22.

    Although with BR players starting to hit $200 for the holidays I'd expect PS3 to lose some of the buyers who want it just for BR and could care less about games since it's twice the price.

I suspect most of the population growth came from third world countries that have little to no impact on console sales. Growth rate is typically very low in developed countries.

  • cthellis, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1It's basically an economic--if not mathematical--impossibility, short of BR demand spiking through the roof, or other completely unexpected and illogical turnarounds. (Like Sony decides to bankrupt themselves and start selling PS3's for $100. ;-) )

    Trends and momentum can be measured, and if you're trending far below at the 2 year mark and exist in a market with much demand, where would you suddenly get a massive consumer swell to not only match the rate of a previous market-leading device, but EXCEED it by such a degree that you can catch up for 2-3 years of lagging behind?
  • cthellis, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1They pretty much capped their sales at the 3.5 mark, though, since emphasis switched to the 360 there at the end.

    KOTOR 2 and Halo 2 dropped right at the 3 year mark and drove some sales, but after that there wasn't a whole lot left to bring new people in, and there was a whole lot MORE emphasis on the upcoming 360.

    I own a 360, Wii and DS and have no intention to buy a PS3 as I feel it will do nothing more than my 360 and it is no longer the cheapest Blue Ray player. However I am tempted by a cheap second hand PS2 just for Time Crisis.
