- mrASSMAN, on 12/04/2008, -1/+41..are you an idiot? These are hardware alterations, not software. Can't download a new motherboard over the internet.
- Smokeydabear, on 12/04/2008, -0/+40I'm holding out for the Xbox 360 Cletus edition.
- GuitarHeroDenn, on 12/04/2008, -0/+32Why not? ThePirateBay lets you download plasma screen TV's off of Amazon for free.
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+30Apparently they just send refurbished systems that already suffered the RROD... so you could end up getting an even older one.
- HappyScrappy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+30Awful, awful article.
It doesn't explain anything we haven't already seen, and most of it is conjecture. The last part is flat out wrong, somehow explaining that it has a 150W instead of 175W power supply because the NXE requires so much horsepower to operate. What? - benderillo, on 12/04/2008, -1/+25I'm still waiting for the flesh light add-on.
- skoles, on 12/04/2008, -12/+323 years too late. Next time don't rush.
The PS3 may have been overpriced and a little late at launch. But they're well built and almost problem free so far. - WhereAmI, on 12/04/2008, -6/+24Nope.
- kravex, on 12/04/2008, -0/+16How can you tell if you're getting a new one before you open the box?
- crussell96, on 12/04/2008, -0/+15hey its the Assman!!!!
- AtomicTheory, on 12/04/2008, -2/+16Are you familiar with the concept of "100%"? You basically just said:
"Every single person who ever bought a 360 had the RROD.... and some did not get the RROD.... and I like making out with dudes."
(I took some artistic license with that last part) - bpoteat, on 12/04/2008, -0/+14@kravex: people like me replacing the core of an older full version and don't want a refurb through RMA?
- petebot, on 12/04/2008, -2/+16
It’s cool that they are updating the hardware, but why haven’t they changed the profile yet (a la the PS2)? I think they kind of screwed themselves by making the removable hard drive sit on top like that—if they make it any thinner, people’s older hard drives wouldn’t fit.
*Not flaming, just something I thought of...I have a 360, and its been pretty good to me. - Smokeydabear, on 12/04/2008, -0/+12I case modded my Game Cube to include a flesh light. It's the wonder waves edition by the way.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2008, -1/+13Lot# 843X, made after 10-21-2008
Arcades seem to be the only ones that have it right now. - i4mt3hwin, on 12/04/2008, -3/+14I have a launch console, mines fine, so you're an idiot.
- YouRookies, on 12/04/2008, -2/+13Bad Move. This is a marketing trick for you guys to buy more 360s. Jasper will not fix RROD just like the Falcon chip didn't fix RROD. (Sad owner of a Falcon RROD)
- kravex, on 12/04/2008, -1/+11http://www.downloadmoreram.net/
Get some RAM for your PC as well. - mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2008, -2/+12I don't know why he's being dugg down, it's true. They'll send you a refurb. It isn't cost effective to put the jasper chip into all 360s...besides, it's not even that easy, there's more to it than just popping in a new mother board. A lot of the internal components have changed over the years.
- khaos4k, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10To be fair, Microsoft actually handles the RMA for the 360 really well. Guess they've had lots of time and chances to perfect the system.
- GiJoeBob, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10360 degrees puts you facing your original direction. I think you mean 180 degrees.
- Jsmuli2, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9u would actually be walking toward it before walking away, but I get it.
- anshuman, on 12/04/2008, -5/+14plus they have internal hard disk, which you can legally swap with bigger laptop disk , plus they have wifi, plus legally install linux OS if you want, plus they have online networking to download/play WITHOUT paying for it. plus its cool :D
- Sheco, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9if they make it any thiner, they can just move the hard drive slot somewhere else, while keeping the same size as it is right now.
It's not like they have to shrink the console and keep exactly the same appearance. - loper, on 12/04/2008, -2/+11I find it funny that they are (possibly) fixing the RROD now so they can sell their new 'experience'. The failure rate until now wasn't enough motivation?
- Ajajadude, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Well, if they're adding internal memory to the arcade version, maybe it'll tout that feature on the box?
- Whackly, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9not gonna happen. get ready for a refub!
- Hooner, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8I turned 180 degrees and walked back.
- gamben0, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Im still waiting for my first RROD (in 2 years).. will probably just pick one of these up instead of dealing with the nightmare that is RMA.
- sublingo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7It's really not about overheating any more, it's just bad craftsmanship at this point. An RROD can be any of a number of errors, one of which might be overheating, but there are lots of other possible causes.
- sublingo, on 12/04/2008, -2/+9It depends. My friend sent his in and got a brand new Falcon one back. I just sent mine in for a semi-RROD (hardware failure) - we'll see what I get back.
- jsauter, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7@bpoteat Same feelings. I can send in my xbox and have its DVD error repaired (replaced with a refurb) for $150 CDN or I can buy a whole new latest gen xbox for $199 and throw my hard drive on there. Why would I bother having it fixed?
- TVarmy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+7Eventually, they're bound to. After so many RMA cycles, the old Xboxes will be so FUBAR'd that even Microsoft will consider them defective and have to ship out newer models. For now, try to avoid overheating it and hope for the best.
- josh1413, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6You sir.....are a noob.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2008, -3/+9You better knock on wood, your 3 years are up.
- kravex, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8Good point, but who the hell would want the Arcade version?
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8This article was obviously written by a five year old child.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I'm holding out for the Xbox 360 Apu edition.
- inajeep, on 12/04/2008, -2/+8"These changes were most likely made in order to support the New Xbox Experience, which requires a great deal of the 360's processing power. Hopefully, these changes will all add up to a more hard, longer-lasting system. "
Huh? Pulling guesses out of his arse? How about trying to reduce the heat and power needed so it doesn't rrod anymore. That's good enough for me. He quotes other sources so it looks like no one talking to Mr. Webster directly. This is the type of article I don't expect to see from Ars. - mywhitenoise, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6kravex, I bought a brand new Arcade because it was $130 with ebays promo and microsofts cashback. Then I bought a 20GB HDD with controller for $35 from CircuitCity.com
$165 (shipping and tax factored in) vs. $323 (Pro with tax included), sounds like a no brainer for me. Now I'm just hoping it's a Jasper. If not, it's going on craigslist. - TheUngod, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5The Cletus edition...is that the one with the bottle opener and gun rack built in?
- WhereAmI, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5"After so many RMA cycles, the old Xboxes will be so FUBAR'd that even Microsoft will consider them defective and have to ship out newer models"
This is a true statement. - Topher06, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5What concerns me is that Microsoft suggests the revamped hardware is in order to support the new Xbox Experience. So are they not just saying that NXE probably should not be run on older models that obviously can't handle the high demand on the GPU? People might have NXE on for a lot longer then diving into a round of GOW2 for a couple of hours, such as playing back music or watching video for 4+ hours, or even just leaving it on all day since its now has better social features. I still think that the NXE will cause a lot more RRODs in the near future on older models and hopefully Microsoft has a plan to retrograde old units with the new hardware if it actually does prevent RROD.
But in the end, I would just buy a new model Xbox360 Arcade if you get an RROD and cut your losses. - benderillo, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6It's funny cause it's true.
- TVarmy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5It is really dumb they don't at least support 3rd party USB Wifi adapters. The fact they ask users to pay for Live after all this really strikes me as odd. The Wii and the 360 are both much more expensive than they appear.
- TVarmy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Let's say "officially." I don't think the law really factors in to modding a console that much, unless there's some DMCA junk restricting it, which is a pretty weak form of "illegal."
I agree totally about live, though. It's really awful they make customers pay that much for an online mode, which has a lot of games that don't even use dedicated servers. Personally, I wish it'd be more like Steam and instead encourage people to buy more games through the marketplace through better availability (include AAA titles you can only get on DVD now and the indie stuff) and use increased revenue to maintain the Live servers and services.
The thing that really pisses me off is that people can't use a microphone on an Xbox 360 game without a Live account if they're playing with a friend in splitscreen. My roommate has an Xbox, and sometimes we play Left 4 Dead with people online, and I have to get my roommate to relay everything I say. He's really selective of what he'll relay, too, as he wants to push his own strategies/ideas over my own. - stk198323, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Care to cite any soruce or something?
- pcflynn89, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7how about some built in wifi microsoft? $100 for their POS proprietary adapter is a major hidden cost to consumers. or maybe a hard drive that is cheap and actually large enough to do anything with. 20 gigs is a joke and $150 for a 120 gb hard drive is a ridiculous. you can get a 1 tb drive on newegg right now for like $90.
once you get all of the features that come with the ps3 STOCK, the 360 ends up being more expensive. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5You are lucky, I had it happen to 3 of mine. They got replaced for free, so its not a huge deal. But now that the 3 years are up, I am a bit worried.
