- genericwhiteguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Thank you! I'm so tired of people saying that buying a piece of electronics is an investment.
An investment is a purchase of an asset in the hope that it will generate income or appreciate in the future. The purchase of goods that are not consumed today but are used in the future to create wealth.
I suppose it is possible that a gadget will appreciate in value for collectors, but I doubt an HD-DVD drive will ever become more valuable. Of course, maybe people that use that word incorrectly are just really bad investors. I don't think that word means what you think it means... - elcaminos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20I'm not partial to either side, I just want one to win so I can go out and spend my money without worrying if I picked the loser.
- cookiemonster01, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22impressive price
- Cherubim, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Blu-ray is looking shaky if you consider the limited feature set of most BR players, the defection by Paramount to HD DVD, and the lack of any decent BR titles by Fox.
- GreatDrok, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20All my fave films are Paramount, Universal and Warner. HD DVD wins!
- spookyttws, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Don't forget about those mini-discs and UMDs!
- TH3W1R3D, on 10/10/2007, -31/+44I still dont want to invest in a product which may lose to competition
- sjbdallas, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16I really am tempted, but I was also looking at the toshiba player and the free dvds which is only about 50 bucks more.
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Dead? 8-track will be back. These things work in cycles. In 10 years all the kids will have 8-track players. And I'm still holding out for Betamax to pull through.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14The Big Lebowski is on HD-DVD. That pretty much wins the war for me!
(No, really, I'm still waiting for the $150-$200 combo player.) - otatop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10In a year there will be cheaper players that play Blu-ray and HD DVD, so you'll just replace the player and start buying whichever format wins.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16It's quieter than the games but stll a whole lot louder than my stand-alone DVD player. I can't put it in my cabinet because it gets too damn hot.

Total: $149.20 - zainag, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Way to go spreading that FUD!
- orlyfactor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Amen, brother. It's like 179 bucks too. big whoop.
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10It's just a way to gather support. If they were nearly dead and trying to clear out they wouldn't have spent $150 million to get an exclusive studio deal.
- Hoodwink, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I jumped on this deal, too good to pass up. HD-DVD collection here I come! My first purchase outside of this one will be the Matrix Trilogy!
- spookyttws, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Yes, you did submit a similar story. But this one became popular. Would you like a Lollipop, or do you not quite get how Digg works?
- tehtopher, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Wow, that is tempting but I think I'll wait for the dust to settle a little bit more.
- diggymow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9That would actually be illegal to do without telling you it was defective or damaged stock.
- skin, on 10/10/2007, -16/+22I hope this isn't a sign that HD DVD's death is around the corner.
- ppete, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Don't forget that you can use this drive on your PC:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748426 - greg9683, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9The studios are basically 50/50 with the big recent moves towards HD. This is MS' wave of pushing more people to buy at a cheap buy and then when it becomes the format, they make even more money.
- Gerz1219, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Betamax customers got ***** over because analog tape didn't allow for dual-format players. If it had been possible to make a VCR that accepted Betamax and VHS, nobody would've had to throw out their Betamax tapes, and indeed the format war would have gone on a lot longer. With optical disc, formats never really need to die. Prices will eventually plummet on stand-alone HD players, and dual-format will be a common option. Have you checked the prices on standard DVD players lately? They're like $30. The player isn't an investment -- they're easily replaceable and only depreciate in value -- the movies are.
- Moriya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Me too...probably a better choice if you're a home theatre enthusiast or movie buff. If you're a gamer looking to watching some HD content on the side, this is a great deal as well.
- goblindegook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Buried for being in Canada.
j/k - byronm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9My 360 is quieter watching a movie than it is playing a game by far. I'm used to the fan noise since i use it as a media center front end as well and the unit sits on a shelf high enough that the noise is above ear level and quite faint.
- IanPatterson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It sucks EH?!
- dillibob, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10is there anyone else in the world who owns a 19 inch tv like me and cant afford a hd dvd player or blu ray?
- cybernetic798, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12I provide useful information and you idiot fanboys dugg me down for it. ***** wankers.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Amazon is an American site, what do you expect? Nothing against non-Americans, but you guys can't keep expecting American companies/web sites to provide equal coverage to the rest of the world. Whether you want to admit it or not, the US is the most important market for the format war.
- kiyyik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Just make sure you pick 3 titles! I picked 2 by mistake, and it won't let me combine orders already. I only get 8 free tittles...*sniff* life is so unfair!
Seriously, though, this is pretty neat. Just got the 360, been lookin' to accessorize :) - byronm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Its even cheaper if you choose super saver
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Shaflugi, mini-discs are something else entirely. Look it up.
- goblindegook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Does black make it go faster?
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4BS. The DVD rip of Hot Fuzz looks better than your 480p.
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The 2nd one is just a bunch of random characters.
- funknjunk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6you're a moron, lower prices= sales boost. this will most definitly boost hd dvd's sales.
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Anybody saying that one of the formats is "dead" is an ignoramus. Borat sold more DVDs in one week than all the Blue-Ray and HD-DVD films combined until then.
This race is a long way from being finished. - jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Last I saw an X360 and HD-DVD add-on drive still costs more than a PS3 and you still don't have half the features. Wifi, online, Bluetooth etc....
- abaird986, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I did the same thing at first. Then called amazon customer support, and they added a 3rd hd dvd to my order for free, no questions asked.
- byronm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Choose Xbox 360 hd dvd addon, add 3 of the available HD DVDs, checkout - select super saver or amazon prime - 179.00
The HD DVD's are buy 2 get one free and will be reflected as a discount near the last checkout step. The 9th disk is simply KingKong which comes with the unit - modifiedbears, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The irony is it's less likely to "lose" if you buy. By you I mean all the people contemplating purchasing it.
- kilodelta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it's aboot time we canucks get fair treatment from amazon!
- hsoj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3There's a good reason they were paid off: 18 months is a long time. Even if it were as skewed as you say, 18 months of exclusive titles is going to at the very least bring back the balance. Then it's still anyone's game and I highly doubt Paramount would switch to Blu-ray exclusively. They'll probably just return to a neutral status.
However, I predict the 18-months to be very detrimental to Blu-ray. I think you can expect one of the major Blu-ray-exclusive production companies (hopefully Disney, though they've been pretty vocal in their Blu-ray support) to pull out in time for the holidays. - knailbomb420, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5You guys need to invest in a surround sound system, then you'll never hear the 360. Or just turn up your TV
