- sgr215, on 10/10/2007, -0/+53Nice work! One step closer to XBMC 360.
- SyberMile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28you mean XBMC HD here we come
- zardozzzzzz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21XBMC would be nice.
Halo 3 hacks would not be nice. Hopefully MS able to instaban Live accounts. - matrox212, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14You know the warranty was extended to three years don't you? Call support and get it replaced for free if you can.
- winmywii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I got banned with the previous version just by signing on. I am a fan of Xbox Modding, but cheating on live wouldn't be cool.
- MayaGeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Fantastic work!
It would be great to see XBMC on the 360 sometime in the future! :) XBMC is perfect as it is on the original xbox, the only downside is that it can't run HD material. :P Keep it up guys! - chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It is a good idea, but a native solution would be much tidier. I don't want to have to boot into Linux everytime I want to watch a film.
- VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Because it costs twice as much?
- MemeWarrior, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yeah, sure... Like I'm going to transcode the two terabytes of video on my server. That's no problem at all.
- chedabob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It's pretty much here anyway. They are working on a Linux port, and there is already Linux support on 360. All we need now is a simple way to downgrade from all Kernels, and a way to sort of the system library problem (it's mentioned in the article)
- foomojive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+17I guess I'm outnumbered here, but considering the big budgets that go into games, the great and constantly improving functionality that goes into xbox live and the dash, and the general ease of use, I'm happy with paying the reasonable prices that go with being a 360 gamer these days. Remember when some SNES and Genesis games were $80+ like Street Fighter 2? Compare the budget of that to Halo 3, and Halo 3 will cost $60. Plus hackers contribute to cheating at least indirectly, which pisses everyone off.
You've inched ahead this round, but Microsoft is not gonna just take it. They're serious about combating hacking. And as long as that keeps cheaters out, I'm with them. - posure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You can't sign on to Live with an outdated 360 kernel.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'd much rather have an upgraded XBMC than what would effectively become a "media PC." Keeping it simple and being able to play whatever you throw at it is what makes XBMC so nice.
- sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7you can fix it your self if it is the rrod problem. you can open the case and re secure the heatsink down or change the heatsink clip to a better one might save you some cash and since it isn't under warranty anyway nothing to loose.
- bigmac375, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6reported.
anusjuice? what the ***** are you thinking? - CamZak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Mind you...I have a PS3 but...the PS3 is gimped, no hardware acceleration, and you have only one general purpose processor at your disposal, not to mention the hypervisor or whatever is running on the PS3 slows it down horribly. Whereas this is promising Linux on the 360...which has nearly 3 times the amount of general processing power (SPUs will mostly be utilized in Linux for video encoding and such) AND hardware acceleration? Sounds good to me.
- salmonmoose, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8MS have given you that ability in an abstracted layer using XNA. That allows you home-brew and also protects those of us who buy games from hacks.
- skaface69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah me too. I can't wait to us Vi on my 360.
- edrift101, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I use my modified Xbox (original) daily to watch movies, stream online video, etc... If XBMC wasn't on that system... it wouldn't get used at all.
- LordBen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Porn spam is bad... reported for abuse suggest others do as well.
- andy2na, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4an opensource xbmc for 360 would play x264s and other odd formats the regular media center is limited to, that is key here. Also, there a ton of other features the media center does not have that are in xbmc for xbox 1. Watching apple trailers, youtube videos, etc. That is the value of xbmc 360.
- theballdredge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6without addressing any of your other points, i would be extremely hesitant to label the 360 'perfect'. it is extremely expensive (both the initial cost of the console and the content available), QC/reliability is a major problem, the power supply and console itself radiate too much heat, and it is very noisy - especially the dvd drive.
- lolhax, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13Great work by everyone involved! I'd love to try this out once I buy a new 360 (old one died :( )
- funkydude101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nice. I hope the xbox scene community goes full speed with this. The original modded xbox was probably the versatile console evar. I have a few myself.
- kypen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Agreed. Native solutions just can't be touched. However, if you're looking for an alternative PC solution, then obviously Linux is the ticket. Native XBMC combined with utilization of the 360's native power for things like DVD-scaling via ffmpeg will be a great solution for people who aren't willing to drop $200 on an Oppo DVD player and they won't even have to use HDMI to get 1080i DVD scaling. :-)
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Oh boy...I sure have been looking forward to running Linux on my xbox.
- vypergts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's coming... http://www.xbox360rally.com/fall-dashboard-update-list-leaked/
- erkokite, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7For many people, being able to run homebrew games and applications is the important issue.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Transcoding looks like ***** (both on the 360 and the ps3). Gigabit network and quad core cpu's. I do not want my HD movies encoded more than necessary. And I want all the odd formats XBMC does and all the protocols
- HeatVision, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sorry, but that list is bogus.
- AoSDFA, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5From Gustomucho: "All in all, I never understood why people would modify a 360 or any console to make it a 'PC' "
Two Words: Fair Use.
Like the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray debate, I'm waiting for the console that affords me the greatest fair use rights, then I'll buy. - DrGamez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's called the games section? You know you can filter stuff out.
WITH THE POWER OF THE INTERENT. - lolhax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I live in a country where the 360 wasn't sold by MS when I bought it. They won't touch my 360.
- digganoid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If only Microsoft would add DivX support.... That is the only reason I have held off buying a 360....
- xjeffx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3says the guy who took the time to comment on digg
- posure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3XNA is limited as the free version requires you to use C#. Most of the existing Xbox applications (XBMC included) are written in C/C++ and can't run on the XNA platform. XBMC also has a dependency on external C/C++ libraries.
- m00nstone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This has nothing to do with free games. You can play free games right now without downgrading the kernal. Go hang out on a forum you understand, MS Fangeek.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3" not to mention the hypervisor or whatever is running on the PS3 slows it down horribly"
Thats your DRM. - bigmac375, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4it doesnt cost 600 to make a 360... i think that was the firgure on day 1, but they have since sliced that in half
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Or, HD Movie and TV downloads via Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
- radiometric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've played quite a few for the original Xbox, but only a few were worth revisiting over and over.
Emulators, on the other hand...
It seems there are emulators for everything from the Commodore 64 and Apple II to PSone and N64. Most work very well, and I'd say that the [s]nes and sega genesis emus are more stable than the original systems. They also allow you to play homebrew for those consoles. That in turn allows an xbox to go from maybe a thousand games on the xbox platform to millions of games on many platforms. - biggyfred, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Wanting to move to HD, I left my XBMC on the Xbox behind in favor of Mythtv. I'd love to see the project continue on the 360 but realistically, isn't the project's move to a full fledged linux port a better solution?
Just asking. I'd like to know what others think. - washboard, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4It makes me wonder what the future holds
- andy2na, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2360 needs to be able to play x264 .mkv's. xvid would be nice, but x264 mkvs are the future.
- kahlessreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Now is that xvid support gonna work with media connect so i can stream some um movies from my pc to TV? Hopefully the XP Pro media connect not the media center one.
- mkearl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I truthfully don't think the 360 will be broke like version 1. I would love it if it could, but at this point have given up hope.
- incabulos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Keeping hackers out doesn't fix cheating. Have you ever been standby-ed in halo? That's not MODing, that's cheating and all you have to do is turn your modem on and off standby in online games in order to acquire an advantage. Your premise to give up liberties in MODing for security will end up in you having neither. Once MS has us all owning Xboxes like they did with windows, we will be running through hoops of money sucking ***** for every piece of content imaginable. Give us a feasible business model like Epic's use of the Unreal engine that allows MODing and you won't need to hack to MOD anymore. Give us user-created content. That's all we ask.
- oilcan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3hot damn this is good to hear. my old modded xbox is feeling kinda dated these days.
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2People who are willing to hack the 360 to be able to put Linux on it obviously don't want to connect to Live, atleast not with that console. Plus with all the hacks to do this they can't send it back in if it fries, so nothing is stopping them from opening it up and trying to create a custom cooling solution for their hacked 360.
For me, I couldn't care less what people do to their consoles. They bought it, they can do what ever they want to it. It just seems like a lot of work to trying an make the 360 run Linux or some media software when all of that can be easily done with old PC hardware lying around the house. - Azimuth1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You gotta love hackers. They always find a way.
